Burning Legs

Not sure why I am asking this on a farming forum but maybe some vets would know.
On a recent trip to Oz my missus complained of having burning legs all night and being unable to sleep because of it, I dismissed it as sunburn, insect bites or her making a fuss.
The following night I suffered the same, it felt like the result of wading through thigh high nettles. Uncomfortable to the extent of painful and only my legs.
I also had to get up 4 times in the night for a pee. This was very unusual and not related to liquid consumption, not only that but full bladder each time as if I'd been hanging on for hours.

How do you explain that?
This was 10 days into our holiday. We had been in a campervan the whole time and bitten every night but this was quite different. The day previous to my missus getting whatever it was we had been to Fraser Island where there were extra mossies about. We both put DEET on as every other day and I had long trousers on all the time (so not sunburn).
Something I had never experienced before and Google doesn't answer it. Wondered if you lot might.

The bit that puzzles me is that it was ten days into the trip, it had been hot and sweaty all along and we had been putting DEET on all along. The symptoms were quite severe, only at night, only for one night and separate nights for me and her.
No rash other than the bites we'd been suffering all along.
No other symptoms and both fine afterwards (particularly no dry cough etc!)
