Burning rape straw compared to wood

When the juice bottle is called upon things can't be going well!

We managed about 150 round bales this season which I will soon find in the straw shed, will see how they are the. But the test bales burnt seemed fine.

It hasn't occurred to me that hestons may be harder to bale up as strings not nets? Bugger.
Hesstons bale osr straw easily

I had the same problem with them not understanding, drove me nuts. They said our purpose built grain stores were not wholly enclosed as they had vents in roof apex! Had to explain that we dry with the doors open to let the danp air out!
Did you get it through with no doors ?

I know a boiler fed by osr straw and they are only getting 2000kwh per tonne. Burns well with hardly any ash but wheat straw gives a lot more heat.

Unless you grow wood on farm to buy it is expensive .
I know compared to coal -oil or gas its cheaper but even sourced cheap to cut into logs or diesel to chip to then burn costs money .
Round bales straw bought are around £6- £12 each or if you grow your own corn just baling costs so lot to look at?

Burnt about 800 rounds of OSR in the last few months.

Averaging 4 - 550 kWh per bale between boiler and tank. Boiler about 78% efficient, bales about 190 kg

I hate wheat straw, never burns well, or hot and leaves lots of ash. Fortunately don't need it though and having just sold some at £50 / t it's just as well!

What kWh would you get with wheat straw ?

Depends on quality etc but we've burnt about 900 tonnes so far and are averaging 3400kwh/tonne. We are using Heston bales and get a bad one slip through that's not just wet but also compacted and it's a problem. Likewise bales that are very dry such as 8% they burn to quickly. Around 15% moisture and a year old barn stored straw is the best.

For some reason spring wheat straw isn't so good as winter wheat straw also.
