Burnt out - front axle

Have a 2wd 50hx on an out farm for feeding silage. The front axle is getting a bit shook. I have access to a free 4wd front axle from a burnt out 50hx which was in a barn fire. Machine was completely burnt out. It had only about 5000hrs beforehand done. What would the 4wd axle require to get it going again and would it be an easy conversion or would the axle be ever right again?

If the freebie was totally burnt, you might find the oil seal's in the axle and hub ends are fryed as well.
Might cheaper to repair what you have as the cost of parts to get a 4wd unit will be steep

As @Lincs Lass says, any slight heat distortion and seals won't seal again, UJ's probably need replacing.

How long's a piece of string job, depends how hot it got, I rebuilt a tractor from a barn fire once, I wouldn't say it was worth it in terms of cost, stripped it down to the last nut and bolt , replaced every single seal gasket and spring washer, most expensive bits to replace were the injector pump and power steering pump, the rest of bits were rescued from scrapped machines, wheels and tyres included, in terms of learning how things are put together and how they work was invaluable. A JCB in the same building was bent all out of shape and impossible to rescue.

I rebuilt a burnt out Agribuggy and had a similar problem, all the seals in mine looked ok and the oil looked good although the paintwork etc looked quite toasted, I installed it and it was and has been fine fir the last 800 or so hrs it's done.

But surely there wouldn't be that many seals to put in? I know I could fix by own but mine is still only 2wd then

Center pivot, diff,Planetary drives, hub pivots ,,I bet theres atleast 10 seals minimum ,then you have to get the 4wd transfer box for your existing tractor and what ever goes with that ,,you could be without a tractor for a week or more to convert to 4wd ,thats if the donor axle fits with out any additional castings ,,Fixing your tractor now would maybe only rebushing ,king pins ,track rod ends

If you decide against the conversion I would be interested in the drivetrain myself as have been contemplating changing my 2wd 50e to a 4x4 setup. Also keen to replace the manual shuttle with a powershuttle box.

Another question- would it be worth ripping the gearbox out of the burnt machine as well. Would there be useable parts inside of that?

It really depends on how burnt it is.
If the paint isn't burnt I'd chance the seals till you see how it is.

I've stripped and resealed a 60hx front axle before, just because it was done after about 20000hrs.

Not a particularly hard job if your handy with the spanners.
You will also need the transfer box off the side of the box, it will need stripping and new seals inside if it's had a heat. Then you will need the solenoid and pipework to work it. Wiring would be handy but not beyond making up.
The steering ram would need doing as well.
I would guess you would need the front axle tombstone too, it's bound to be different front the 2wd one.
