After having had and using an fsmail.net e mail address from orange for about 15 years they are it appears going to just turn off the server on May 31st for all their email addresses suffixed as these.
Orange.net
  • Orangehome.co.uk
  • Wanadoo.co.uk
  • Freeserve.co.uk
  • Fsbusiness.co.uk
  • Fslife.co.uk
  • Fsmail.net
  • Fsworld.co.uk
  • Fsnet.co.uk
Closure will entail the loss of all email addresses held on their server and stored e mails.

Their only recommendation is a gmail address, yet some say that financial institutions wont accept gmail addresses

What is the best alternative?

Was annoyed in 2007 when they cut off my fsmail account and have never had anything to do with orange since. Biggest mistake I made was not taking a backup copy of the emails but then I assumed they would be there for life and as soon as I lost the account it was to late to recover.

I don't understand how you lost your emails @renewablejohn, unless you were logging on to the Orange website to get your emails. I have a wanadoo email address, and recently received the notice from them and have set up a gmail address and started to use it. I've Windows Livemail on my desktop, and to test the situation, I've just disconnected my router, restarted Livemail and all of my emails are there. They are stored on my computer.

It depends on what mail protocol is being used, POP3 or IMAP, on your email client.
With IMAP, it will generally mimic the folder layout between the host (website based mail) and the clients (outlook, thunderbird etc). If a folder and emails are deleted on the client, they will also be deleted on the host.
It pays to keep an eye on settings of each client.
For example, on all my mobile devices, I have it set to leave a copy of any emails on the server. That way, when I fire up my email client on my main desktop, they will get downloaded to that. The main desktop is also set to delete mail from the web host once downloaded. That way, I always get any emails onto my main desktop machine, once on there, they won't go to a mobile device. But, if I'm out and about, I can recieve new emails on my mobile device, and they will stay on that device until I receive a copy on my desktop machine.

Who won't accept Gmail? I use that now without problems. Managed to get my own name with no numbers too. We were with BTInternet and then they start charging and then it goes up etc. etc.

Your own domain is a good idea. I used to have my surname.biz but wasn't on auto renew and some bstard pinched it.

Pleased you could explain why I lost the emails as like many people i assumed they where safe. Not had a problem as far as i am aware with gmail.

I also learnt the hard way. I set up a new email client that was using IMAP instead of POP3. When I deleted a folder in the client, it also deleted it and all the folder contents on the server. Gone. For good. Always pay attention to settings now.(y)

Just looked I have 2434 messages saved on the account, like a fool I have just left them on the account , moving some (all) of them will take a lot of time, along with all the contact details and updating those sites which have the fsmail.net e mail address logged into as well

Pi**ed of with orange to be honest

I got told of this , when logging in about three weeks ago. I have had an fsnet email since 31/12/1999 so have a lot to lose.
Managed to set up a gmail account later that day and got about 4,000 emails to download across, and the benefit is that the storage is about ten times as large, so no more overflowing emails.
However I still havn't manged to get my contacts to cross over. Keep getting told ( once it has started the process) that there is something wrong.
