A few of the threads on here lately have mentioned that we should be working smarter and not harder, in fact most jobs on our farm make sense practically but seem to have little economic benefit.
I've read many posts here asking what to diversify into but what enterprises should we be avoiding?

What are your worst jobs for taking up time whilst not showing much profit?

In other words everything to do with agriculture
Dad spent a morning the other day straightening bent nails and I've had two days this week helping family and neighbours with TB testing. Not to mention the calf I have to tube everyday because it's too stupid to suck.

But that's farming isn't it. By the time you added up your time with that calf you may find you might as well have given it a bullet and done something more financially worthwhile.

It's a strange industry that's for sure.When ever we have builders here, they look at me in astonishment when they chuck unused cement/blocks/bricks/ timber off cuts in a skip, and I dive in and retrieve them for use around the farm.You can here them mutter to themselves"that blokes a f**king nutter"

I didn't really want to start a moaning thread just wondered what sort of daft things farmers find themselves doing (mostly just because they want to).

Waste not want not!

I tend to think they are nutters for chucking any of it away!

Don't they realise that a 1/4 bag of cement that has been left open for a week is still fine to use!

And if it goes a bit hard, jump up and down on the bag to turn it back to powder again.

Only a week, pop it in a plastic bag and tie it up with string (it still won't last any longer). Then jump up and down on the bag to turn it back to powder again.

What about calf rearing? Buy a calf, bag of milk powder, spend hours mixing milk, buy course mix and if they all survive they are worth what you paid for them.
