Buying At Market for the 1st Time

Far better buying a smaller lamb in early September than a smaller in mid october.
Never a truer word!
We tried buying from later sales for a few years. Could generally get the strongest lambs for less money. Trouble was they were the strongest second or third grade lambs. After 3/4 years our standard of finished lamb started dropping off. Swapped back too first sales and quality started lifting straight away.

When trade is sticky, the best auctioneers will often take a bid or two off the wall if it means that:

1. The price reaches a level at which the seller will sell.

2. The price has reached a level which the buyer is happy to pay.

The poorer auctioneer who is unable to do this often ends up with too many pens that are ''passed'', which itself leads to a deterioration in trade and more and more passes.

( The late Brian Pack, personal communication)
As it says above. I have no problem with an auctioneer bouncing my bid off the wall a couple of times as long as the price is still right. When I'm selling my finished lambs/cast ewes I expect the trade too be pushed and held up by the auctioneer.
When I drop out and leave him with them because he's pushed me that bit too far it's not always their fault. The seller can have too higher regard for their stock and set unrealistic reserves.
Don't think there will be much need for wall bids this time. Will be lot of money flying around the hummer lamb sales.
