Buying Stock Bulls

So team Celtic has had quite a run, sons are in demand, semen used in a lot of herds based on what he has done and he has bred a lot of impressive cattle on both looks and performance, and most importantly his sons and daughters are doing well.

Comber, not so much of a success despite having the upper hand of being marketed by Cogent.

It's nice to see that quality still counts.

Certainly left quite an impression on the breed.
I remember getting to UA back in 2012 just as his class was about to be judged. First cross in my catalogue that day and stood on amazed to see him being one of the first to be turned out the judging ring.
On passing him in the lines later on I mentioned my surprise at this to his breeder who light heartedly said so was he but that the main part(the sale) was yet to come. How right he was:)

I can't see the benefit of paying more than 4k for a commercial herd. I don't think you see a great deal of benefit above this figure for calves off cross bred cows.
I paid 5k for my last one and it is the biggest mistake I have made (he had a low sex drive although nothing wrong with his sperm. He then got occitis from a cow treading on his balls and became infertile!) he lasted 2 season before I had to sell him fat for £1200.
I would definitely insure if I paid more than 3k in the future.
We've got a low fertile bull to go and seems to be difficult to move him.

I appreciate what you mean.

You need a lot of unrelated cow families to avoid buying at some point, even with AI things will get tied up eventually from the female side.

If you buy replacements or run a terminal bull you can constantly breed your own bulls from one cow line.
Yes, agreed.
I have a cow that has had 14 excellent calves and now has a bull calf at foot got by AI.
To be frank he doesn't look like much at the moment but he has a good nature and I think that after 14 calves I know what I am getting.
He has 4 half sisters in the herd but I have another bull.
