Not looked yet not had any worm enough weather for aphid activity since emergence

last year we planted wheat 20th September did not spray and had no virus

here if wheat is emerged in October I do not spray
this year since Oct 1 it has been cold wet and windy so now the risk of virus on October emerged crops is very low to non existant
if you do spray you need to be sure the aphids You find are up the plant and can be hit directly

we do also have a lot of predictors that will control aphids as I have not used any insecticide on autumn cereals since 1991
and non in the spring summer on any crop for more than 5 years
when I was drilling there was a layer of spider webs so with several spiders per m They will control the few aphid that land in wheat fields

We left the drill in a field we had just planted wheat into a catch crop and the next day the machine was covered in spiders and webs, hopefully that’s promising

I agree the aphid don’t have a chance

the higher risk will be those following osr that had 3 insecticides in the autumn then a pollen beetle spray and a pod midge spray

when we had bydv bad it was when we drilled early and had crops emerged by 15 September and 3 leaf by 25 th

I will be looking for aphids in my over winter cover which is oats plus 500 kg per ha spring barley

Bird cherry aphids found on winter barley volunteers in an osr crop a month ago. Grain aphids found in cereal stubbles 2 weeks ago.

Chopping maize yesterday and had to stop for a breakdown. While we were fixing forager loads of little spiders crawling all over us, irritating little buggers but a good sign !

I think the risk is direct transfer from spring cereals volunteers - there will be less gaps between green flushes and new crop emergence this year

If they are happy there they will stay there and not move to newly emerging wheat unless you plant into the green cereal bridge
last year we found peach potatoe aphids in osr volunteers we drill into on the green but no grain aphids or bird cherry aphids
before spraying identify the target no point killing all the predators for no gain making the problem worse next year

Second cereal in touch and go conditions not a good place to be
if it was dry good conditions like 20 18 the chance of a good crop are much higher

if it is nice free draining land spray off and wait till the end of the month

We planted a lot of winter barley into spring barley stubble but got it all harvested before the rain and had a good flush which I killed about 16 days before drilling. It is an extra dose of glyphosate though which is the trade off. Can’t find any aphids.

Why is it extra? You did another with the pre-em?
