Bye bye coal, hello expensive heating.

Burning coal in open fire banned in the green and pleasant land from today. The lucky ones will have mains gas, the unlucky ones can freeze like brass monkeys or take the knee to OPEC. How is one expected to keep one's mansion warm?

I have electric storage heaters and open fires in a listed 600 year old house. A sensible heating system will cost £10000s and I have a landlords agent to deal with.

I think some people should think more on the effects of the regulations they come up with. But then in your suburban terrace with gas on tap you don’t need to worry about the peasants in the countryside

Depending on the size of the mansion, but it really shouldn’t be £10’s of k for a oil or lpg system 🤔 I’d have thought even on a big place £10k would get a lot of it done 😉

It’s large not huge, thatched roof 2 foot thick walls or lath and plaster and some that cannot be touched because of the listing. It’s the labour as well as the practical side that puts the price up. I am prepared to pay a large proportion of what’s needed. Just need a few more years to persuade the landlord to agree.

Would you not be better modernising the electric heating?

Without knowing more its difficult to advise a solution but my 300 year old listed farmhouse is totally heated by biomass and the new rules will not make any difference to that.

With solar as cheap as chips I would retain the electric for the 9 months of the year when solar is useful as these old houses require a lot of heat. The more that you can get for free the better. As for open fires do you actually mean open fire or fireplace with a stove in it. Chimneys are a wonderful way of removing all your expensive heated air and throwing it into the atmosphere whilst replacing it with cold draughts. Does not have to be like this but a lot of owners of old properties do not recognise the problem and then put in oversized heating systems to compensate for the problem rather than remove the problem.

Everyone will ultimately have to have air or ground source heating, new builds by 2050, though some homes unsuitable. Something to consider. https://www.greenmatch.co.uk/blog/2016/02/pros-and-cons-of-air-source-heat-pumps

They could have them in every new build from next week onwards no problem as new indulated houses are easy to heat and retain it. It’s flipping old stone built, dirt floor farmhouses in exposed areas that’s the problem! We have no problem here during snow or prolonged freezing spells but a few days of easterly wind converts our house to a cold store suitable for meat storage!!!

Burning coal or wet wood on an open fire is so last century.
Try dry wood on a good log burner, you actually get a warm house on probably a quarter of the fuel.

The change from coal to gas for domestic heating has made incredible changes in my lifetime. We never had lichens growing anywhere, no it even grows on my tractors. The layers of shite in the air as you look across the Cheshire plain have almost gone, just cars and Stanlow responsible now. The air is unquestionably cleaner now than it was 40 years ago.
My house runs on wood for heating, just put double glazing in and insulated all outside walls and loft space. Too bloody hot now! Have to have bedroom window open.
