Bye bye W7!

Sadly, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom are pulling the plug on Windows 7. I guess luddites like me who still have faith and trust in the long established, cheap to run and non intrusive OS are not really generating much income for MS now....?

Rather sad really, as my experiences of the latest offerings from MS have not been that rewarding! Going to be fun.... NOT! I used to like the challenge of a new PC, new hard and software was usually pretty rewarding, but they have taken on a whitegoods feel nowadays.

So how long dare I leave it with no security updates etc on my old Gal...? I guess it's time to find another machine and start a gradual transition. Probably go for another micro box, maybe time for an SSD with an HDD as backup...

When Windows 7 reaches end of support on 14 January 2020, your computer will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:
  • Technical support for any issues
  • Software updates
  • Security updates or fixes
While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended.

I have Windows 7 on one of my older laptops that has some design software on that I still use. I can;t say I enjoy it to be honest. Windows 10 is much nicer and easier to use once you get the hang of it. You won;t miss it once you have made the jump.

I’d rate W7 just slightly above W95 for all time hall of fame shitness. Couldn’t wait to dump that POS.

Go Win 10 you’ll never look back (not at Win 7 anyway).

Heck it’s only been available for nearly 5 years...

95 had some.... drawbacks I agree, but so did earlier iterations!! As for W8..... I have found W7 to be good in honesty.

I had a couple of bits of now redundant software that needed W7 and never bothered changing. Last W7 box fizzled out, literally, after I forgot to vaccuum it for too long...! So I stuck W7 on an Acer mini PC 3-4 years ago and it has been quietly humming happily ever since, never switched off, up on a desk out of the dust under the desk.. ;)

Recently lost a hard drive in an old laptop that was running win7. Installed a new ssd hard drive and a new (unlicensed) copy of win10.

It absolutely whizzes along now and win10 isn’t all that bad compared to the other stuff that happened since 7. Laptop has 8gb ram and I think a 2.6ghz processor.

I would go for 8GB RAM on any machine these days.

I think a typical W10 install is around 70 GB or it certainly was with my everyday apps and odds and sods on it. A 128GB boot drive may be plenty for users with low requirements.

70gig hey? More than I thought...

My requirements are not overly demanding these days, and no games or big CAD type packages so that dramatically reduces horse power demands! I'll have a furtle about and see what's available ...

About half that in actuality...my entire W10 virtual machine, with some apps installed is only 42 GB in size

See W10 system requirements from MS:

You lot

Windows Vista 64 bit was probably the worst OS ever.

Anyone remember OS/2 Warp?
Also used SymbOS, MS-DOS , CP/M, AmigaOS, MacOS

happy days???

Well, I know that life is a lot less geeky now!! :ROFLMAO:

MS-DOS, and CP/M, joy and unhappiness, although DOS was waaaay more usable for me! Warp was a strange beast, I dabbled in and dabbled out.

Pop Basic in there too... My introduction started with a TRS-80 clone around 78/79! A wee cut above the Sinclair offerings
