Cabbage stem flea beetle survey

Hi all

I know oilseed rape is a bit of a dirty word at the moment, and cabbage stem flea beetle even more so, but we are doing a survey to see if we can get a good picture of what tactics are being used to "combat" CSFB during both establishment and for the larval stage, and to see just what impact they are having. Hopefully the results will give some pointers about how to grow the crop successfully (or not as the case may be). We're interested to hear from anyone growing the crop this year (even if has unfortunately failed), even if you're considering not growing it again next year.

We've got a couple of excellent Sony noise-cancelling headphones to giveaway to a couple of lucky winners, plus around 20 Dekalb merchandise goodie bags for those that complete the survey. Obviously we will look to share the results directly with those that would like a report, plus more widely in the farming press.

So far we have around 150 responses, which is a great start, but would be fantastic to increase that further to get as good a picture as possible!

If you're interested you can find the survey here: https://cropscience.bayer.co.uk/blog/articles/2020/03/cabbage-stem-flea-beetle-management-survey/

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help!

One question you didn't ask - what will you sow with osr next year? More, less or stop growing it altogether. I intend to halve my area & I know at least 2 neighbours who are dropping it altogether.
It thought that too.
Also, it didn’t mention how the poor crops have been doubly harmed by pigeon damage and the extreme wet which seems to have been a perfect storm this year.

Ha! Thanks both - I appreciate you taking the time to respond and post the constructive feedback. It's a good point - perhaps we could and should have asked about cropping intentions next year (although we might not have liked the answer I suspect! :(). Re pigeons and wet - also a good point, but we wanted to try to and restrict it to CSFB - the survey is plenty long enough as it is, so as ever with all of these things it is a balance between asking everything and what you can realistically expect people to spend time doing.

Cant access it I'm afraid. I keep getting a browser messages saying the site is dangerous and will remove private information. I've never seen this message before on anything else either.

That's a bit weird D14. I'm 99.99% certain our site is neither dangerous nor will remove private information. At least they haven't told me it will anyway! Have you had that on any other pages on our website or just this one? You could try the survey direct link and see if that works? https://bayerag.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_24BFUe9vwZSKtUh

I've never seen a message like it before. It says and I quote 'This website may be impersonating crop science.bayer.co.uk to steal your personal or financial information. You should go back to the previous page'. The direct link does work though.

OK - thanks for the feedback. It doesn't come up when I click on it, but who knows with technology why things like that happen! I'll pass that onto the IT department and see if they have an explanation. Glad the direct link works in the meantime!

Done it but you've got a glitch. On the last page where its a score from 0 - 10. When you submit it it won't accept the number zero.

Hmmm...on the slider about a particular tactic success?

Yes any slider where its from 0 - 10. The zero's don't work when you come to submit the form. Its actually on all the pages so you have to choose '1' when you actually want to choose '0'. Hope that makes sense.

OK - we'll bear that in mind when analysing the results - effectively anything rated 0 or 1 is pretty unacceptable so in reality probably not to much of a problem in interpreting the results. Thanks for the feedback!

At the questions for soil moisture at establishment the options run from (1) 'dry' to (4) 'adequate', it would have been preferable to have had an option for 'too wet and cold' especially for the later plantings.

TBH, a lot of this years problems were caused by a combination of cold wet soils with plants that just didn't show any vigour whatsoever, which was compounded by CSFB as a secondary factor which finished of struggling 'runty' plants barely into rough leaf.
CSFB was NOT the primary factor to plant mortality (not in the south of Scotland anyway) but it was the 'coup de grace'.

My problem is not lack of plants it's lack of any umph to get going. For me if all my osr does appallingly badly at harvest it will be it's last year this year. Can't afford to get this stage thinking the crop is ok, spend all the money apart from 1 spray and then for it not to grow in the spring.

Done. I’ve written off another 6.2ha today that looked ok two weeks ago. Drastically reducing area this year, if not completely getting rid out of rotation. Anything that got bitten at establishment had all vigour extracted!

I think it may be our last year too. From drilling to harvest there is a constant battle against csfb, pigeons and slugs.I think life would be easier growing another break crop that is more consistent even if there is less potential profit.
