Cage Wheels, are they really that bad?!

Sorry if I am being dense, but does the rim size matter (within reason) if I am putting different wheels on? Surely it's the stud pattern?

no, it doesn’t matter, as long as the match side to side & physically fit under mudguards etc

My tractor for example, could be configured with a wide range of wheel & tyre sizes, depending on what the customer wants, from I think a 38” rim up to a 50” rim
I have 480/50 on the rear, but I doubt many in the UK would run that :D

But why do you want them?

ahh, sorry....wasn't trying to be beligerent

I want to modify them for working on steep grass ground by welding pieces of flat steel to the bars to make a kind of grouser. It gives the tractor more bite on dry, baked slopes where a dual wheel spreads the weight and reduces the tyre bite

You couldnt trust old star type wheels on a slope, they would break off
Best get a set of stocks dual rims and get the welder out
A 48 inch rowcrop might be a good base, but a step up stocks set will be like hens teeth

Apologies for jumping on your thread @Selectamatic - but do you know if back wheels from a 990 will fit an 885? Or are they different?

I'm looking for some row crops for my 885.
It would depend on the age of the 990. Wheels from a 990 of the same era as your 885 should have the same stud pattern but I don't know if a 12.4r36 will fit under the mudguards. A 9.5r36 is the same height as the standard 885 wheel.

On reflection, get a set of cages wheels to suit 12x38 , should be plenty about and by the time you add your extra plates they will be right

Wouldn't new or newish tyres on the tractor, and a set of bald tyres on the duals be better for that situation, the tractor tyres giving you the grip, but the slick duals stop you tipping over ?
Not sure whether I would trust the 5 star mounting system either. I have four clamps each on the rear wheels of the 6640, plenty of people have told me two would be good enough, but where I go, if I were to lose a dual, it would be game over for me !
