IF you need lime, use bulk calcium *ground* lime.
Calcifert is exactly the same, just prilled, and 6 times the price
If you don’t need to adjust pH, gypsum is usually free ex yard.
There is a 'Calcifert S' ?!
Go on, how much are they charging for something everyone else is giving away for free?
I can’t remember what it was when I had some a couple of years ago, but £160/t rings a bell. At application rates of c.90 kg/ha and put on with a normal fert spreader, it’s hardly dearer than getting a contractor in with a belt spreader to spread this ‘free’ product (I assume that’s delivered free as well?).
40 mile haul, at a guess £6 or 7 tonne, spreading £4 to 4.50.
All in, £11.50 'ish, so about 1/14th of the cost. Or a 28T wagon load applied for about the same cost as 2T of 'Calcifert S' delivered but not spread.
I doubt 90kg/ha will do much. The first time we spread it here was at 2.5t/ha, and soil sampling 12 months later revealed no additional residual sulphur for the following crop compared to a control plot.
