Started to get prices end of last week for creep feed for spring born calves. I think I need to start them a bit earlier this year as grass is short. Prices seem to be north of £250. I‘m thinking this is on the high side given the recent feed barley price and poor returns we’ve had on fat cattle, although improving now. I’ve got some barley left in the shed I could mix with something but it needs to be a safe feed. My first though is mix the barley with dark grains and beet pulp, don’t know the price of them yet, what do you put in your calf creep?

Oats 70 barley 30 ratio plus protein pellet to 17% plus mins and acidbuf ,we find with a high oat content they are full before they over do the concentrate intake to much which helps to even out what eat when they are starting off

50% mole calf starter pellets (18% protein , 4mm) 50% whole oats by volume easy to mix crudely in the loader bucket .or alternate bags when filling the feeder .

i use barley soya and baking soda and sometimes buy a bag of bull crunch off ecv to mix in with the first few feeds to get them used to it but would be wary of feeding barley without soda

I buy the local merchants coarse calf grower. Anywhere between £250 and 260 a tonne delivered. I’m not a big volume customer so I’m sure prices could be squeezed.
I buy it rather than straights as it’s handy. Get what I pay for - the calves are flying and used it for years.
