Calf Jackets

Which calf jackets is everyone using?
Are they worth while for the initial cost and effort putting them on/washing them?
How long do you leave them on for?

Started last winter with a couple and soon bought more. Cosy Calf for us as well, we tried a MVF one but preferred the Cosy Calf jackets.
If you are an Arla member there is (or was) a discount on the Cosy Calf jackets. Ask when placing the order.

We bought a couple of Mole ones last year and added a few more this year. Use them just on any stragglers or sick calves. Had them on a couple then took them off when mild, put back on yesterday with colder weather, for the last 5 not yet weaned (a bit tight on those ready for weaning - will come off as soon as weaned!. Just gives them a helping hand so they don't drop even further behind.

I wouldn't rear my heifer calves without them, I bought a slightly cheaper German make (can't remember the name) and they have paid for themselves several times over. Most powder milk manufacturers recommend increasing powder concentration during cold weather, I tend to feed the maximum concentration to achieve accelerated growth plans so the jackets are my way of keeping calves warm and growing. I don't know where you are but around here we have outdoor public washing machines, like vending machines, in petrol station car-parks and the like. They're great for washing the jackets, mine are supposed to be done at 30deg, I've washed mine at 60 and even once at 80 no problem. I keep them on for the first 5 weeks.

I'm planning on getting a few more, will definitely get the cosy calf ones next time.
