Calf shed design

First thing to do is work out how many calves you need to "process". 0-6 months is too big an age range IMO for one building.

We built a bespoke shed for 0-8 week olds (weaning age) of 80'x30'x12' in 4 bays using bay one for new borns in slatted individual pens before grouping them to a max of 10 in each of the other bays until weaned where they are moved to another shed.
Roof is clad in Profile 6 with small ridge vents. Prevailing wind gable is castle board with one side yorkshire boarded and the far gable in vented sheet.
Only trouble is that we have expanded quicker than we thought and have had to add a lean-to of similar size & use Galebreaker roller doors on the bays
Next thing is to buy some lorry curtains for the more sheltered side that occasionally gets a cold wind .

As previously noted by others, access for a machine to muck out (hence eave height) is crucial.

Whats wrong with being in the same shed if the shed is big enough? Perhaps i can see sharing the same airspace the older calves could spread pneumonia virus's to the younger ones.

Think you've answered your own question. If you get a contagious disease, the youngest ones will succumb quickly.

I really think you'd be better off splitting them up TBH in separate buildings

Can't comment on the product ( other than the silage nets and bags) but felicity is awesome in the office! Well worth a call just for the banter!

How’s the sheds going? Got plans through here to finally put up a dedicated calf shed instead of them spread everywhere in crap old corners. Plan is a 60x45 hung off the collecting area for washing pens etc. It’ll have a feed passage at one side leaving three pens roughly 20x30. A volac two station feeder is to be incorporated so I’ll need some cost effective drainage not a channel. Thinking running twinwall pipe directly into lagoon. Trying to decide how best to transition calves as never had a feeder. Thinking few days in individuals at calving pens then move or individual pens in/next to feeder to then dismantle and wash.

Post some pics of your shed when its up.
Planning for mine has just gone in. Shed will be 120x60 with an open ridge, giving me a 15ft central passage with individual pens and autofeeder pens on one side then weaned pens on the other.
One gable end of the shed backs onto the side of the parlour so at this end im thinking of having my calving pen. That way there is little effort moving calves around as they wont leave the shed until they are maybe 6 months. I will draw a sketch of my planned layout if i get time another night.

Would disagree with that. Vent ridges on all buildings that will house livestock. Side openings do not provide ventilation alone.
Calves don’t generate enough heat to create a stack effect.

Far better nowadays to have mechanical ventilation in a calf shed then you can be sure the stale air is been removed.

Don’t need the heat to get the ventilation. If sides allow for a draw the wind blowing over the ridge creates a chimney draw effect
How about on a very still damp sort of day?

I’m sure they would probably be ok with an open ridge but personally if I was building from scratch I’d design it so I knew it would work regardless as it’s your future herd that your housing in there.

Galvanised can be an issue if you plan to weld gate brackets etc but the majority of sheds around me are being painted using that 25yr Two pack Industrial Grey paint. Think it’s the 24hr drying stuff. Expensive though but the next best thing to galv.

Red oxide is the biggest load of tripe since the eu banned an important element that was used to make it.
