had a calf born last night, in the wettest , coldest and windiest part of the shed ffs! done all the ususal, tubed , coloustumn , jacket plent of straw etc. and got here warmed up and away

it would have been handy to have a box or something to pop her in, under a heat lamp like the lamb warmers. Has anyone made something to do this . i was thinking pallets , or IBC for inspiration ?

Solway sell them with a little electric fan heater they are fantastic , only have to save one calf and paid for! Will last for ever and easy cleaned etc etc

I use an electric blanket. Best thing ever. Put it on top and tuck it down the sides, even over the head, but leave nose sticking out. My Vet thinks it brilliant. Warms them up really quickly. Cost £16 from Amazon. Very low fire risk.

I may use the electric blanket idea have the ideal place for one as the cow can't get to it and close to a socket.

I made the dogs beds out of half a pallet with tall plywood sides so they would be off the floor and their blankets or straw depending on the dog would dry easily on the pallet slats and the ply kept drafts off them. Like those plastic dog beds you can buy but better.
It makes a great calf warmer with a fan heater shoved under the pallet and the blanket/straw taken out.

5 gallon drum of hot water and bury the calf and the drum deep in straw, has worked here in the past. I use a gallon can with lambs and put them in one of the 80 kilo feed block tubs covered with hay
