A green and verdant landscape

There is coverage today in the Yorkshire Post, Sky News, ITV News, Farmers Guardian, Farmers Weekly, FarmingUK and on BBC Farming Today on a new report from the RSPB, National Trust and the Wildlife Trusts.

The joint report calls for at least £3 billion to be spent to help farmers restore wildlife and tackle climate change under future farming policy, highlighting that the UK already spends around £3.2 billion a year on both farm income support and environmental payments under the Common Agricultural Policy.

Once we leave the EU on 31 October, we will create an ambitious new system based on paying public money for public goods. This will help our farmers become more profitable while sustaining our precious environment and tackling the effects of climate change.

The new Environmental Land Management (ELM) system will aim to offer land based businesses the opportunity of a meaningful income stream from delivering environmental benefits.

We do not underestimate the scale of the task in implementing the new ELM scheme, which is why we are developing it within a co-design framework, involving a wide range of stakeholders.

The Government has also pledged to continue to commit the same cash total in funds for farm support until the end of this parliament. This includes all funding provided for farm support under both Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 of the current CAP, guaranteeing funding for projects that are approved by the end of 2020, and applies to the whole of the UK.

The new Environmental Land Management system will aim to offer land based businesses the opportunity of a meaningful income stream from delivering environmental benefits.

"The new Environmental Land Management system will aim to offer land based businesses the opportunity of a meaningful income stream from delivering environmental benefits" However it will be poorly conceived, excessively complicated, wildly bureaucratic and the bulk of the money will end up in the hands of a small number of land agents, advisors and large estates.....

Precisely.
Meanwhile our wise rulers plan to import our food needs from countries producing In far less environmentally sustainable ways than we do currently.

Typical lack of non joined up forward thinking from government. No change there then.

All of these articles written by environmental groups suggest billions are *needed* by UK farming. That's like saying farmers saying "billions needed by Amazon to help fix the NHS".

"Tackle climate change" is mentioned twice in the above press release.....why don't we also make that Google's problem?

Who should we suggest "needs" money to help obesity?

The hiccup with all this is the money they claim is "needed" by UK farming is a lot less than the cost of sorting out the actual problem.....oh, and the problem is getting bigger all the time.
