Calves ill

Got a calf with its tongue hanging out, saliva dribbling like a tap and also can't see properly. Got a suckler calf outside the same. Vet thinks its some sort of nerve damage. This one inside, bucket reared. Any ideas?

Yes breathing normal. Had a suckler calf outside the same a couple of days ago. No improvement yet. Waiting on vet to come see this one. Never seen anything like it before. Suckler calf blind in 1 eye and ear droopy.

Seems odd to get 2 a few days apart. All the others in the batches seem ok.

Had similar whilst looking after neighbours sucklers.Calf had abscess under tongue caused by a virus and secondary infection.Penstrep 5 day course eased it but didn’t cure the secondary infection. Zactran worked. Also needed steroids to take down swelling.
Vet said he has seen it mainly in multi suckle herds. Can spread easily from calf to calf via teat/saliva etc.Best to isolate calf and cow from others

The blue calf was just a bit of pneumonia and is ok now. The suckler calf will be getting shot tomorrow. Had lots of injections by vet but getting worse. Has bad scour now that smells rotten and is black.

Think it has got a very bad infection. Might get a PM done on it.

I too have had one this year nearly lost him 5days pen and strep very slow recovery. Mine is a suckler calf would dearly like to know what it is, i presumed it was wooden tonguewill be nearly 100 kg less than its contempories.

I have seen this, it was some kind of nerve damage in the spine area we think,infection of some kind
vet jabbed them and all was well within a week,hope its that simple for you...

Suckler calf died last night, getting a PM done as curious to what was wrong with it. Serious infection going on i would think, black/bloody scour that smelt rotten plus the tongue hanging out, blind in 1 eye and droopy ear.

PM result came back as systemic listeriosis. Low levels of cocci as well but not enough to cause problems.

What’s the cause of systemic listeriosis ? Bad bale of silage?

Weren't getting silage, cows still on grass. Calves getting creep.

Was it the black calf that died my calf had tongue out like that but recovered but it has been nailed. Housed mine today will give him some tlc and see if we can get him moving.

Diphtheria can make their tongues hang out/ ulcers under them. Can't remember what the vet gave us for a calve that had it- pen + strep possibly

Yes it was the black one that died. Vet thinks it could have been licking molehills. They have got mineral tubs to lick.
