We had a strange one the other morning.

Stopped harvesting Rape at about 10pm
(12%mc). The rape was well ripe and had been at 9% during the day.

A bit of a fog occurred between midnight & day break but then it brightened up well from 9am onwards and was 20deg by 11am. At 11am the moisture meter was showing 17-18%!
It then started dropping back over the following hours.
I couldn’t believe that the bit of fog had such a dramatic effect.
The exact same thing was happening in two fields over 10 miles apart.

No oven results back yet so we’ll see what the real moisture content was.

Oats can be 12% on green straw, are there greens sweating in the sample?

a few but the oats bit hard from the eve before and very soft first thing this am !

am thinking it must be related to the oil content of oats , as usually once they are “fully fit” they do not wet easily

will keep a close eye on temperatures in store for sure !

but oats usually first to go after a rain , have harvested them at 15%2 hours after a 25mm event where wheat was 22% plus ! Appears boot is on other foot now
Look at the chart. Oats are far dryer for a given %RH than wheat. They just react faster wetting or drying

never seen them wet faster than wheat, I always assumed the much higher oil content acted as an impediment to water imbibing

I remember actually testing oats that were physically wet, and they were still 15 % when ground sample was prepared

wouldntsay 1% difference for given RH is much of a difference compared with some of the other grains ?
