Can farmers relax or is it just me?

Dad always used to say, 'the things I do on Sunday are the things I want to do rather than things that need doing'. Most of the time it was 'plant a bag full of trees'. He loved his trees.
Going on holiday, I rarely think or worry about the farm. Last 10 years, all our foreign holidays have been organised by the same guy who runs a printing business. He is on the phone every evening, seems to be running it remotely.
I remember talking to Colin next door, and we were talking about a job, and he said "that is a job for a Sunday", but then I remember Phil saying "I never cut silage on a Sunday, unless it has been very wet, and then I think you've made me do it!"

New baby born by c section end of nov so I’ve been on full fathering duties looking after the other one who turned 2 a couple weeks after as mum fairly incapactitiated because of surgery. Looking forward to feb getting fert on, field walking, drills ready etc.
Missed a lot of agronomy updates etc the last month but will catch up in jan.

all I can say is full time parenting of toddlers is damn harder work than arable farming, a good lesson to me!

I always say it’s just to easy to go to work, I’m under pressure and need the money so the answer is to work!
I enjoy my work and I like achieving something every day so a full day off is hard.
We just had the southern townies for a few nights, they laze around in pyjamas half the day, sleep for 16 hours a night, come downstairs at 10 and exclaim it’s early, eat toast and go back to bed until 1pm getting fatter by the minute and have no zest for life what so ever. I would rather rod drains in a cesspit than live like that

It’s Christmas, but after just a few hours of sitting around watching telly etc, supposedly relaxing, I start to get itchy feet thinking I should be doing something outside on the farm. Arrgghh! Does anybody else get like this, is it just a farmer thing?
The only time I really relax is when I’m away from the farm and preferably out of the country!
Its not a farmer only thing , all SME owners go through the same **it.

Apart from routine milking feeding etc, we also lamb 100 ewes at Christmas.
There's nothing like lambs running around to stop the Winter blues!
They started on the 12th, about 30 lambed up to 20th, then they stopped until today when 14 lambed.
(It's frustratingly slow compared with our 600 at Easter)

Nor a farmer but I don't switch off always busy. I finished on the 17th until the 4th which I was looking forward to.. Plan was to office stuff upto date. I've had some bug not Covid that knocked me for six so I slept a fair few days. Over it now and twitching and buzzing to go and do something....I just think if I can do it now I can do something else tomorrow.

Pisses me off.. but that's how I'm wired I guess.

No, not just you.
Had a minor opp on my hand last week, so lots of sitting about now. And I'm so very bored and frustrated, I'm even doing a jigsaw puzzle!
After 6 weeks I shall be a raving lunatic!

Is it that people love to work or do they not know how to do anything else?
Over the years I've worked for farmers that are always doing something and those that are very good at relaxing or going away somewhere, leaving the work for someone else.
A bit of a generalisation but I think those that know how to take a break or do something different see their businesses in a different way to those that never leave the place.
Pottering around the yard is the business owners equivalent of an employee gardening, decorating or servicing the car on their day off.

Never been able to "switch off" my mind goes at 100mph all the time, always worried about something, also the fact I don't get much more than 4 hrs sleep a night makes it worse as I'm tired and struggle to concentrate on things ! Been like this all my life tho !
