Can hear the Worms moving ?

To day in a notill field heavy land
I could hear what I believe is worms moving up and down their burrows
I thought it was the water draining but the drain flow is now virtually stopped so I now think it could be the worms
and the soil now has surface cracks about 2 inches down
field mole drained last 2 springs and have now dried out well

digging down an inch or 2 and there are a lot of smaller worms

any one heard it

In my grass fields, which are now covered in worm casts, if I go out at night I can hear something that sounds like water soaking away. Can't hear it in the daytime. I blamed worms for that. Might not be. But I was in a bad mood and wanted to feel I'd done the right thing by adding grass leys while everyone else planted wall to wall wheat.

Can be percolation, too, air being drawn through well-aggregated soils by the weight of water below.

Love that sound, "the sound of success"... growing up I thought it was just what happened, then I went dairying 🤐 and didn't hear it again until I was looking at buying this place, the sound of a working water cycle sold it

I have heard the water purculation when the drains are running hard after a day after rain
but this is once the drains have virtually stopped and on rescently moled ragdale clay soil which has been 5 years notill
so the deep burrowing worms have built up
may be those that cannot hear it should listen a bit harder
to hear whatever the noise it needs to be a still quiet day with no road noise so not heard it on land near the a1 or a 46
where there is constant Trafic noise

I have used ear defenders in tractors for 40 years ( the radio needs to be 3 db higher than the engine to hear it so in all tractors 8 hours per day does serious hearing damage ) using a hammer with out ear protection is also damaging
most now weear protection when shooting
loud music does the most damage
i still hear the sky larks and hope to in the future
my 85 year old father complains he cannot hear them
a day in the tractor with out ear protection leave me with ringing ears

Was out yesterday listening but could not hear the sounds I heard
a couple of weeks ago

this could be because the sounds I hear were water movement
could be it is aided by worms but not sure
the drains had virtually stopped running when I heard the noises but the flow could have been enough to make the noises

when the drains are full on I can hear a lot of water noise

it is certain that worms make a noise when moving the birds that predate on worms appear to listen for them

If you jump & land on both feet, (like a bunny hop) you will surprise the worms & can hear them all suddenly withdraw further into their burrows!

Now do you dare go out into a field & try it, or are you worried about what the neighbours will say!!
