Can I hardface mild steel?

I've bought a bed tiller from a forum member, really happy with it, but rear roller needs new teeth.

I only do 10 acres a year and thought hardfacee mild steel would be fine....but would hardox be much more expensive?

I could do the mild steel myself, but I guess would need someone to profile cut out of hardox sheet.

But yes a roll of hard face wire or hard facing stick electrodes if you have a stick welder too. Both very capable.

I'd be cutting new teeth to weld on. Hardfacing mild steel ones, or getting hardox cut.

Hard facing wire is about £250 for 15kg of 1.2 mig wire but it does a good job. Bit more difficult to get it to run nicely

O.K, @S.Jamieson this is only my opinion & what I would do if performing the repair - others may have a different idea.
As the current teeth are worn to almost non-existence I'd have the new ones profiled out of Hardox, this will be slightly more expensive, however, as they need doing anyway then it is worth taking the hit.

It's a driven roller remember. Teeth are working the soil.

If you're going to the trouble of welding new ones on, then get them cut out of the proper material. Cutting is easy for somebody that's set up for it, the material is relatively small, and they might have drops that can't be used for much else.

if your going down the root of using hard face wire or rods. use the welder at lower amps than you would do when normal welding, as the weld beads dont need to penetrate, just enough that the bead is quite high and thin

Blimey they are worn. That machine must have done some work in its life.
I do some work for a veg grower and they have jones bedformers with the same roller. They do thousands of acres and not seen one worn down as far as that.
