Hello friends. I'm Nick and I'm obese, I'm 97kg I want to practice to reduce to about 70kg, can I do that?

you can never out-train a poor diet

Diet is everything when it comes to weight loss, exercise is more about being fit, you can actually put weight on through exercise if you build more muscle

Yes Nick, I was 106 kg about 3 years ago and got down to 79 kg earlier in the year. But that was a bit unsustainable really and I’ve fluctuated a bit since after having a double hernia op in Jan.

I’m now around 86 kg but really want to be back around 83-84 kg which is pretty good for my height around 6’2” and age, coming up to 46.

How old and tall are you? Do you get regular activity and exercise. What do you eat?

As said a temporary “diet” is crap. You will need to start being very conscious of what you stick in your gob.

If you are serious about long term, sustainable weight loss, then my sincere recommendation is that you weigh yourself every morning after a dump and write a “food diary” - noting each and every single thing you eat together with either a calorie measure and what time you at it

The combination of diary and “weighing in” makes you:
- Very conscious of what you’re eating coz you need to maintain the discipline to write the bugger down
- Forces you to look at the timing of your meals (and snacks) - late dinners are terrible, missed/skips meals are sh!t too
- Your overall calorie intake. If you have an activity tracker on like a Fitbit you will quickly work out that “more in and less out” is really a simple concept.

You will start to see what is good and bad in your lifestyle and food habits. A couple of further tips there

- cutout or severely reduce your carb loading - bread, pasta, rice etc are all death to losing weight. They are nice to eat - but they’re “dead” carbs mate.
- don’t eat dinner late (past 8pm) if you can at all help it
- keep eating your meats, fish, dairy etc
- swap sweets for fruit
- and swap fruit for veggies

Good luck.

its really not rocket science , where people go wrong is setting unreasonable goals so become demoralized.

what i would suggest is firstly Eat less , and or drink less if you are drinking beer and or sugar drinks . say you have 3 can of pop a day cut down to 1 or two , same with beer .

food do the same , don't have any crisps or chocolate in the house its just too tempting , say you like a pizza have only one per week , same with takeaway only one per week if you try to cut them out you will just demoralize yourself eat 3 meals a day , especially breakfast but not something like sugar puffs or a full english have some porridge or granola that will keep you full till dinnertime , but again if you want a full english have one a week.

at the gym just do stuff that keeps your heart rate up a bike , running machine , you needn't run just walk fast up a slope if you are sweating you are burning calories , most good gyms have a tv on the machines to relieve the boredom some good bikes in gyms you can race yourself ,or a virtual competitor, don't bother with lifting weights , there is to much time wasted between sets when you heart rate drops .

and above all don't take any supplements you don't need them your body is full of energy in the form of fat and you need your body to use it not wait for top up !!!

I dont agree with you about no doing weights. I think its one of the best things you can do

I found it took quite a while to get my body used to smaller portion sizes. And to keep getting to the gym even for half an hour on the rower. I've gained weight, which was the goal, but have reduced fat in the usual man places. For the first couple of months I was ravenous despite eating a decent level of calories. I took up eating spinach and leaves just as belly fill.

Spinach omlette with tabasco sauce good post gym meal

Joined a tug o war team last month, and the first night of circuit training with one of the other team lads was tonight, he's around 5' 10" and 140kg, he's wanting down to 110-115. I'm 6'4" and 101kg, wouldn't mind going up to 110-115. Lass that runs the training worked us as a pair you seem to work harder when you're working with someone, competing almost.
Hardest bit tonight was having your back against the wall, feet together and in a pose as if you we're sat on a chair, thighs horizontal... Try hold that for 3 minutes... I couldn't manage 1 minute without needing to get up, so bloody hard!

Arms were screaming on the first night of tug o war training could barely hold a pint glass but you can't give up, keep on going, stop and you let the others down.
Got paired up with a lad last week, big guy too, two against two, winner stays on... After 4 ends I was fecked!

Given up dairy a few years ago and now I've all but given up tea, down to a few cups a week instead of a 6-7 a day. drink green tea now and quite like it, lots of weak diluting juice. I think dehydration has a lot to do with weight not shifting/general health, not chlorinated/fluoride laced shite stuff though, ditch water straight off the hill is best!
You feel so much better working out!

Dehydration is a huge problem for most people, I know loads of the older generation that only bring a flask of tea/coffee to work, I remember been made fun of years ago for drinking water by the old codgers that live out of a flask.
Intermittent fast for 14 hours, drink water instead of eat in the morning, you may pee a lot but you feel great and hydrate yourself for the day

My missus goes to the gym to exercise then goes for fish and chips because she is hungry.
Meanwhile there is nobody home to cook my dinner so I am on microwaved rice and turning into Mahatma Ghanndi.

What you eat has a much bigger effect on weight loss than exercise IMO.
My wife bought a cross trainer to enable her to lose weight. She eats just as much as before but buying that contraption has meant she has lost over 200 pounds.

I can't leave the house without a feed in the morning, maybe due to the wrong diet and not having the proper reserves.
I'm needing to get the poly tunnel up to get some veg growing, plenty of quality meat, but tasteless veg from the coop.
There's a baker in town who does amazing bread, a couple of good thick slices keeps you going for hours. I don't think bread is bad, it's the quality of the mass produced bread that we eat is bad.

Real bread that you make yourself or get from a local artisan bakery is fine. The stuff in the "bread aisles" of any supermarket is just dross.

But is real bread that much better? I mean it still has heaps of sugar and salt, no?

I don't think there is any need to be scared of carbs - they are not all bad and as long as they are part of a balanced diet then you do actuality need some.

What you should consider is what TYPE of carbs you are eating, Complex carbs are good, ie wholemeal bread, brown rice / pasta / fruit etc and will also get you the fibre that you need in your diet

The carbs to avoid are the simple ones, processed sugars etc

BTW - advice from a personal trainer I used in the past, the big wins in muscles building is your legs and gluts (ass) - these are the biggest muscles and are easiest to build quickly so will therefore yield the biggest gains when increasing basal metabolic rate ad therefore fat burn

Blokes love to lift weight for bigger upper body as that look best !! But you are actuality best to focus on lower body for a faster win if weight loss is your aim

Interesting one.

I think weak glutes can contribute to lower back pain too.

Not necessarily,
Here is one l bake fairly often.

Pint glass of stoneground wholemeal flour.
Pint glass of plain white flour.
1 teaspoon bread soda
3/4 pint buttermilk.
Desert spoon of butter.
2 eggs.
Pinch of salt.

Mix dry together first then gradually mix in wet.
Shape in circle or put in tin.
190 °C for 25 mins.
Done.
No sugar and only a few grams of salt.
No faffing about weighing ingredients or kneading or knocking back or resting and all that palaver.
