Can I use rims the opposite way round

Got a round baler and I'm wanting to narrow it in a bit, it's currently 9'6" wide and I'm catching the walls at both sides of the road going to my biggest customers. Now I can turn the wheels round, and due to the offset make it 7 1/2" narrower. The stud holes have a chamfer on one side where the spring washer sits, can I get away without it on the other side, if I use a flat spring washer, or will I always have bother with wheel nuts coming slack. Studs are a bit slack in the holes, but the rim does sit tight on the hub

If it was mine I would not try this without something to take up the slack, or possibly a cover plate to avoid damaging the original wheel.

I've got tapered ones now, I'll have a better look at the job this morning

Careful, will the dishes lie flush with the hubs if you do that, could put all the pressure on the studs with no support.

I have seen wheels with the taper on both sides. If the wheel centre is thick enough, perhaps an engineering firm could taper them. Alternately, maybe the centres could be cut out and rewelded to change the offset.

I could do with looking at this on my marshal barrel spreader, but to make it wider as it’s definitely unstable on bankings that I like to cut across. I have a funny feeling it will require new rims though.
