Can this man get a HGV licence?

I have chosen to do all of my CPC training in one block this week, an a fellow is on the course who worries me a little.
The chap i am referring to has what we used to call a non-HGV licence (7.5 ton) that came with his car test (as they did back in the good old days) and is doing the CPC course because he wants a career change to doing driving jobs, and has intention of trying to get his class 2 hgv.

My question is this...

He has been banned from driving multiple times for traffic offences,
He has a conviction of road rage induced ABH against a 72 year old grandad,
The medical profession has put him on, and upped his dose of medication to calm him down.

Can this chap actually get a heavy goods driving licence?
Could he find employment if he did?

Hopefully. Truckers get a bad enough press as it is without twunts like him charging about.
Goodness i hope he cant get a licence.
I no longer have my own lorry, But my licence gives me the incite into just what a massive dangerous fast rolling sledge hammer, a truck potentially can be.
I think you become far more concerned about who around you isn't safe when you have young kids.

The doctors report will only say what he tells them unless he goes to his GP who will know his details. There is a big problem with people going to companies who do discounted medicals with no background checks. I suspect that was a major factor in the Glasgow bin lorry crash when he did not declarecall his faintscand dizzy spells.
For all the stated reasons you give he should fail.

I believe your official medical records are supposed to be checked even if using a back street discount medical place, so this should show up i would hope,
As opposed to not declaring your own problems to the medical profession.

I don't think they check your official records, I've used them and it was a bit of a farce, just blood pressure and eyesight test, and declare any medication etc. certain things are notifiable to DVLA so might depend what medication he is on

Besides anything else I would expect the stress of taking and passing a HGV course and test will be too much for him.
Nobody is likely to either employ him or insure him with that record.

Insurance may be a problem (if he can pass the test without blowing a gasket).

Most agencies (for example) only want drivers with clean licences. If his bans were more than 5 years ago, his licence may show as clean though.

A CRB check would flag up his criminal record.

He was telling us all quite proudly how he has found out about a local dirt cheap medical place he was going to use
........because he knows there are no checks with your medical history if they are not declared to the examiner. It is DVLA who does the checking, not the doctor. If he is on some sedative to calm him then very unlikely to pass.
The question for you is whether you are going to speak to the local cops when he gets his HGV or just let him fall asleep some morning and drive over a car?

I'd like to think the odds were against him actually getting a job.
Firstly he has to get a medical and there is a slim chance his medication will be picked up.
Secondly he has to actually pass his hgv test and although I did mine 32 years ago I don't think it's got any easier. HGV examiners can be tough and hopefully when presented with a licence with lots of points on would be stricter than normal. I could envisage him having to take multiple tests and given his temperament I would think he would give up.
Thirdly he then has to actually get a job and agencies tend to have high standards and are likely to refuse anyone with points, he would also have to supply references which he may also struggle to do.

Or a mum on the school run!
Nope, still too under qualified for that one around this way!!
Woooaaaahh :stop: Bet you didn't think you'd find one reading this thread ;) Obviously, I'm a cut above the average school mum  but yes, I can think of 3 off the top of my head that I wouldn't park near or let the kids walk anywhere near. My heart's in my mouth when they swing into the car park :nailbiting:

It gets worse!
It turns out he already has his medical!
And I would guess his licence could look clean if the bans were over 5 years ago.
Would he be obliged to disclose his ABH conviction at any point?

I am at a testing facility for the Cpc course so I am going to have a chat to somebody here before I leave.
