Can TM engine fit into MF 1200....

If you fancy doing it , just do it , but as some say prepare for failure , used to be a 1200 turboed. Had 5 furrow plough and press and subsoiling. They pulled lugs of back axle once where arms fitted on , was some machine in its day.
judt do it and as one said keep Massey breaker in your phone just in case
How many of the older tractor had the tb turbo effect on them , and stood it well with a sympathetic operator

The axles were mostly the ones fitted to the MF 185 or similar. Not the faster running diff ones with the larger final drives found in the 595 and 4wd 590 models. So 110hp is about their safe limit and, personally, I would not want to put more than a 120hp engine and 500Nm torque in front of a MF1200 driveline.

Fairly sure that my tier3 MF5445 would outperform an MF1200 if both were factory standard specifications.
i think you will find that MF 1200 had MF 1080 axles ,at least that what is says in David Walkers book inside Massey Ferguson,up to 76/77 they had dry disc brakes although they all had the square axle

Was the 1250 turbocharged? I seem to remember that MF may have officially sanctioned a turbo kit [marketed by Opico and MF] for the 1200 or 1250 as well as the 595 at some point.
When dad worked on the farm ,his boss bought a 590 4wd ,,it was dead and heavy so it went back in for a turbo ,,it came back with an opico ,,sounded lovely ,,just it got through 3 ltr of oil a day on hard graft but the stainless stack did show up at night

Yes just looked it up Think tb. Folded a while back
One of them died prematurely and I think they struggled on for a bit but they certainly disappeared at least ten years ago, possibly quite a bit longer. I still remember their address as being Luneside Industrial Estate, Lancaster.

I'm amazed at what I do remember sometimes. At other times I'm alarmed at what I don't remember. :oldman:

MF officially sold the Opico turbo kit for a while and it was even featured in their pocket catalogue in the late 1970's. This was before TB turbo's with their superior, more suitably small turbochargers were ever thought of.
I had one of the first TB turbo kits ever, fitted to my 590 4wd in 1980. Thomson and Brake came down personally to show it on my yard and they fitted it all there and then after I agreed. Opico and their dealers had a nice little earner with their ridiculously priced extra oil filter which they claimed needed changing every 100 hours with the oil change. TB used a disposable element that I think was the same part used as a Morris 1000 oil filter and cost pennies. I don't recall what obscure brand of large turbo Opico used but TB used far more responsive British built Holset turbos as used exclusively by Cummins and by many other premium engine manufacturers also.
Can you recall what the hp of a 1250 was normally aspirated? Was it 120ish?
I’ve had 2 1200’s and a 1250. The 1250 certainly felt more powerful. They were all wonderful things to drive!

No. The 1250 were relatively rare beasts and I don't think many were made and sold. I can't recall ever seeing one in the metal or of seeing its specification.

I’m fairly certain it wouldn’t match the 1200 for grip. This was my one on a Dowdeswell DP6, it was the heavy framed version that could be extended up to 8 furrows. If I recall the plough weighed over three tonnes and the 1200 would pull it with ease through heavy Weald clay. I’d be amazed if your 5445 would pull that plough even in the easiest of soils.

I replaced the DP6 with a DP8B to be a bit kinder on the Tractor.

I’ve still got that plough, although to be fair it’s hardly done any work in the last 21 years. I wish I still had the tractor, especially if it was still in that condition.
