I was called up in 2001,the year of Foot and mouth,at that time I was running livestock.
End off.
I did ask how they pick jury duty candidates, electoral roll.
So being a one man band,I came off it for a number of years.
Back on now

Yes started lambing on the 7th March. Got called on the 8th March.
Did it help we graze the judges land?
Said I didn't know of a date to defer it to under animal welfare grounds and as your only allowed to defer once didn't want to risk it.
Got a nice letter of apology back that my names been taken off the list.

If any TFFer is called to Exeter in jan 2020 please do go!!!
Having read most of this thread, it does make you wonder!
Plenty post on here when called for Jury Duty saying I'm too busy, I've more important things to do rather than sit about doing nothing. Then when some thief steals a gate or runs through a crop hare coursing, they're all on here posting an outrage that nothing happens or the scoundrel gets let off.
Well step up to the plate and let your voice be heard, if it's always left to townies how are they supposed to hear your plights.

I was called for jury service many years ago but did not have to attend as I am a self employed farmer with both cattle and sheep. I told them that there was welfare issues with the stock and was told I did not need to attend. You must contact the court asap and explain your situation.
Highlight welfare issues, you could end up in court yourself for negligence. I was excused.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment of your post, it does depend on how much time of your day/week your farming takes up .
Can your farm run without you, do you employ sufficient staff to take up the slack, allmost certainly not on a lot of livestock farms, some might be able to do the essential jobs before/after jury duty but if you do you will be doing more than other jurors, o don’t suppose there will be many trying to get regular work done as well unless they are self employed.
Unfortunately if jury duty was left to those with nowt better to do it wouldn’t leave a lot to choose from, it really is a dilemma but is surely something everyone should make an effort to do if called upon but it needs to be recognised and indeed is that it’s not practical for everyone to do.

I got called 3 years ago but due to a health problem I have It wouldn’t of been possible for me to do it so I replied to the letter stating my health problems and why it wouldn’t allow me to do it and I even offered to get a letter from my GP or my consultant but they said that wasn’t necessary and that I was excused. Very trusting of them.
