Canary seed

Sounds like the company from Yorkshire that vanished a few years ago who were pushing osr and crambe. They were just playing with EU funding.

I sincerely expect you will receive feedback a little something like this...:

The admix contains wheat, wild oats un-thrashed heads, grass seed and ergot. We will need to clean and colour sort this load.
Please expect the following charges; handling in & out, haulage, cleaning and 2 weighbridge fees.

Don't expect it to go somewhere for sorting a) near the grower or b) near where it's being delivered too either.

I think @FarmerDaveTheRave you are being a little harsh, I have dealt with PC for several years and while they might not be the best about they are certainly not the worst. In fact apart from expensive seed and difficulty pinning down the haulage at times I have found them good.

Unlike the linseed, there is no facility to farm save the seed as it is taken on a licensing system rather than through the normal royalty route.

Thats odd. So you cant pay royalties, whats the impliacations of that?

PC said our canary seed was wet, high admixture and had ergot. We requested independent testing which took a lot arguing to get them to do. Not unsurprisingly the independent results came back dry and admix in tolerance. Just informed by email, no apology. Only had to pay for half the optical screening then

Harsh in what respect? Nothing but fact stated there. Speaking from experience.

As a side note - we have dealt with two generations managing PC over many years. Mainly Linseed, but crambe, red wheat etc. No complaints in that respect when dealing indirectly but have an almost identical story to Charlie as above and who knows how many more. In the driest year in recent memory which our moisture meter wouldn’t even register a sample on we were slapped with drying charges.
Tell me I’m being harsh ?

So why do you keep dealing with them? I would stop immediately if I had had your experiences. I have not had any unexpected results come back from them.

As I just explained - no problems dealing indirectly.
Gave canary seed a second chance as 2018 was an exceptionally tough year on spring crops generally. A negative balance sheet has shown both years anyway after deductions. This thread is about giving others a reasonable expectation when growing the crop - not questioning or calling others out.
If anyone is looking for clarity without reading the whole thread Teslacoils gave a perfect summary on P5.

I’ll second that, we’ve been dealing with them for around 4 years now and had no issues. Last year was the first year we’d had a cleaning charge but it was totally expected and to be fair I though the charge was reasonable. Was cheaper than me putting back through my cleaner!

We dealt with them for many years. Brown linseed, red wheat, yellow linseed and canary seed. Of the lot canary seed was by far the worst in terms of knock offs.

The conclusion was that it was more the end user than PC being the funny fudgers, with clearly no understanding that grain could get to them with any admix at all.

This is the usual situation of the grower having a contract with the merchant, but the end user rejecting it then the merchant just passing the news on to the grower. Pc were singly not interested in being helpful . This was a similar experience with the golden linseed.

Red wheat was ace, and no problems with the brown either once you realise they need phoning every week to get it collected.....and unless it's changed since they were bought, they paid by cheque!

I still grow linseed but for someone else. No red wheat contracts I can find. Wouldn't touch canary or golden linseed with a barge pole through any merchant.

Volunteer Canary Seed growing in Triticale about 30ac like this...accidental intercropping!?? Still 2 weeks from being ready. Reckon I should try to separate it when the potential mudbath finally ensues.

Well it volunteers were/are no thicker in the combine trail than elsewhere so assumed it to be shedding - the combine isnt great at evenly spreading chopped straw -always thicker in the trail.
Photo taken 13.08. Didnt realise it was that long ago already. Guessing 2nd week in Sept for Glypho
