torque from electric will nake towing with ICE feel very old fashioned

even if it was 60k think of the fuel savings ! Electric car is saving us 6k a year in fuel so 18k over the 3 years we will keep it or 36k if we keep it 5 year, goes a long way towards its higher purchase price

then tax, currently zero

What mileage do you base the £6k/yr on @Clive? Seems a bit high for my calculator.

Not disputing that the EV makes sense, but can't see how the fuel savings can be that high.

A Volvo XC90 diesel used for 15,000 miles a year at 40mpg would, at current fuel price, consume only £2130 worth of fuel. That's a big powerful seven seat 4wd car.

I reckon that some people's calculators work differently to others. ;)

I assume he's doing north of 40k miles a year, to get those figures, based on roughly 4p/mile electric cost and a 30mpg petrol equivalent.

Yeah, but who doesn’t love the sound of a diesel pulling uphill?

Maybe the manufacturer could fit an external sound system to replicate the music from a sweet running smoker.
The new Audi Etron coupe ( same as the expensive porsche that the boss has just different badge) has some noises designed by the engineers to give a feeling of driving... Its a sort of whoossshhh noise. I think the Porsche that the boss has makes a sort of smug smile sound ;):LOL::LOL:

Electric is the way forwards, largely because internal combustion engines have been destroyed by regulations. What a sad sight it is to open a bonnet and reveal something resembling a plastic barbeque hood straddling a nightmarish rat's nest of pipes and wires draped over a convoluted exhaust system the size of a wheelie bin. I can't look at a modern engine without getting an irresistible urge to grab a sawzall and liberate the poor thing from it's plasitcky prison

With the debate raging about female abuse, i doubt the term "Pick Up" will be acceptable for much longer.....

What a time to be alive
Along those line, how the heck we have been able to keep using the name Rape (as in oilseed) amazes me!
Most of the rest of the world call it Canola or Colza.

The woke society will “Put down” its name eventually. Probably just after CSFB has completely Put down any possibility of growing the crop!

so try comparison to a 20K miles pa RR Vogue at 25 mpg and - I worked out saving when I ordered the EV pre covid etc when fuel was quite a lot more expensive as well

No broken calculator, just different parameters, last time I owned a car that could do 40 mph I was 17 !

It's a significant saving on a like for like (price bracket) new, family car

I'm sure I could have saved even more had I bought a £500 used small diesel engines car but it's hardly a comparison is it

I thought you bought a taycan?
Isn't an xc90 a more like for like comparison to a RR vogue.
Sorry if I'm not keeping up!
And I'm not knocking going electric, intending doing so myself shortly.

Ahem, I think it is broken.
20k miles@ 25mpg = 800 gallons/year = 3,632 litres/year
£6k "saving" = £6,000/3632l = £1.65/litre based on zero electric costs.

More realistically, your electric is pushing 5-10p/mile, so:
EV cost = £1-£2k/year
ICE cost = 3632 x £1.20 = £4,300

Saving of £2-3k/year

Still quite acceptable, but not the £6k/year you claimed above. Add in the competitive company car tax arrangements and it gets better, but still...

The first Transit we bought had a max speed of 40mph. The whine from the worn diff made it impossible to go any faster.
Still did several trips from NW Wales to Bisley tho, and a couple of trips to Newcastle on Tyne as well.
Young and stupid!

Fuel was a bit more expensive when I was working it out and the electricity really is inconsequential, you can charge for free a lot

£580 pa road tax saving is nice as well plus the zero BIK / company car tax - its over a year ago since I went through the decision process with my accountant so may be that what I had in my head when recalling it was worth circa 6k pa to us vs the old car

long and short is I can't see myself ever buying an ICE car that does regular mileage / daily use again

price wise the Taycan Turbo is similar to a RR vogue (spec dependant of course)

looking at swapping for the Cross Tourismo version, the dealer says I can have 100% purchase price back at the moment pretty much so zero depreciation yet

Cost aside - electric is just better in every respect to use

Convenient - it's got a full tank every morning when I wake up !

Performance - different galaxy to ICE, not just in terms of speed, grip, and low COG etc - it's tech so well suited to a 4x4

Reliability - Unknown yet but it's so much simpler it should be loads better, hardly any servicing to do etc
