Can't be Schmallenberg, can it?

Had a deformed lamb born in the night. Both front legs very bent, neck bent to one side. Just put it down to a random accident & buried it. Thinking about it now I'm more awake, it's twin is the right shape but a bit stupid. Now I've another ewe looking like she's trying to lamb but the cervix isn't opening & I'm wondering if there's another deformed one on the way. BUT it's April & I'm way further north than I've seen any reports of Schmallenberg. Am I just being neurotic?

if we'd never heard of schmallenberg ....you'd just say 'one of those things'....case of 'a little knowledge ect'.....plus if you're a bit short on sleep a bit of mild paranoia could set in?

We used to get a deformed lamb or two every year long before schmallenberg was invented and we still get the odd one now.

cos it's a effing hard place to live let alone farm i should imagine....plus hardly going to be groundwater issues up there?

probably because there not an incinerator. wouldnt be viable. no farms where i live, biggest flocks will be about 200 sheep and a couple of folk might have about 50 cows.

It’s hardly cheap sending them away where I live....I used to burn loads of sheep on thorns in the old days...why can’t I do that now? It’s not interfering with ground water after all

good question....probably the same reason arable farmers can't burn straw and now have fields of blackgrass and slugs

Cheap straw and cheap grazing if put to grass for you mind

Deformed lambs happen, we had 1 last year which was seimise with 1 head, other twin was fine and lived a long and happy life.

We have a lamb this year which wasn’t pulled yet has muscles missing on its neck on 1 side, it’s got a slightly droopy neck that turns a bit but the lambs is fine.
2 this year with no anus’s (died after 3 days) and 1 lamb had a normal length tail then half way down another tail was coming out.

Just one of them things...

Allowed to here - officially "remote". All sorts of things are ok here - killing for our own eating, driving a vehicle on the road with no MOT, for example. Remoteness has disadvantages right enough but...
