Can't hear a feckin' thing!

Having been suffering from increasingly poor hearing over the last couple of years, I happened to mention it to the nurse at the doc's when I was in for something else the other week. She looked in my lug holes and said something along the lines of 'Oh My God'. I didn't quite catch it, for obvious reasons.
She suggested Olive Oil ear drops 3x a day for 7-10 days, then a 'syringing', whatever that might entail.

Sounded a bit long winded to me, especially when I saw a bottle of Otex ear drops that 'reduces the need for syringing' and was only a 3 day course. 'Sounds good to me' I thought, so handed over a few shillings and bought a bottle.

Squirted some in, as per instructions, and lots of gunk was duly produced. Squirted some more in, again as per instructions, and now can't hear anything at all. Pretty sure the gunk has now plugged my lug holes completely. So much so that I could only just here the radio in the tractor this evening, although I suspect the residents of the local town could.:D Tele's on now, but I can't hear any sound at all. Daredn't turn it up like the old man used too, or I'll wake the rest of the house up.

I got Mrs NeilO to ring the quack's at lunchtime (no point in me ringing), so going in for this syringing thing tomorrow. I bloody hope it works, as getting sick of Mrs NeilO and NeilO jnr looking at me, saying something, then bursting into hysterics.:stop:

Syringing sounds about 50 times worse than it is, had it done before Christmas. Olive oil in the ear is cheap and works as good as expensive drops to soften the ear wax prior to syringing. All syringing entails is squirting lukewarm (cold is a very, very bad idea) water into your ear to dislodge the now softened wax. You'd be surprised how much stuff can fit in there.

Easy, painless, fast.

Be VERY carefully if you diy though. You can do lots of damage if you go at it like a bull in a China shop.

The original advice was good.

When it's done be prepared to turn the volume down on life or get deafened

Fully sympathise, but honestly NeilO, you've got nothing to worry about on the syringing front. I had to go pretty much annually to get my ears done (easy to remember as it was around Christmas time, hard to actually go because it was Christmas time) otherwise my ear drums would just end up being blocked by the wax.
The actual syringing itself is a five minute event (won't call it a procedure) that's done by the nurse, using what's very much like a mini pressure washer that fires an ever so fine, jet of warm water towards the wax, in order to break it up. The sound of the wooshing of the water in your ear, was the worst part IMO and as for feeling, it just felt like a tingly rough massage on the inside of your ear.
On the Olive Oil front, try warming that up, before using a dropper to place it inside the ear or just carry on using the Otex ear drops, if you're a wealthy Pedigree Ram Breeder :p.

Bit confused, wasn't saying to DIY. Doctor syringed mine, and was him told me the olive oil does the exact same job in softening the ear wax as much more expensive potions :)

I have same problem @neilo , well not as bad as yours ... syringing it totally painless 3 days to soften it up then blast it out , that otex stuff is an irritant if used too often .

I wasn't suggesting anyone had advised diy (though I do it) just getting the warning in in case @neilo decided to do the farmer thing and do his own.

Completely OT, but I was watching a travel program about India the other evening and Michael Palin encountered a professional ear cleaner. Apparently, it is a worthy and honoured profession in India and this man came from a long line of pro ear cleaners. He actually removed quite a quantity of debris from the Palin ears. much to the patient's surprise.

Deafness does have it's benefits. In my negotiations with the cops post gun seizure. I was able to evoke the Equality Act 2010 which states that service providers (e.g. police) have to make provision for my disability so all communications have to be in writing. Very useful to have a written record when one party might have a conveniently selective memory of events, not that I would dream of casting nasturtians at anyone!:)

Otex = urea hydrogen peroxide

When I was a kid the doctor did my ears with Hydrogen Peroxide, I have always had 'dull' hearing in my left ear, but the only time I could hear was when she did that, it was horrible, cracking and popping really loud, like having a firework in your head.
I am now totally deaf in the ear(n)

Do NOT use HP in your ears kiddies :stop:

Don't 'like' that, just the warning of its use!
