Caravan holidays

Went once as a kid with me parents hated it, didn't think I'd ever go again.

Bought a caravan this year though and think it's quite good fun the kids especially love it.
Have been 5 times this year, got another 5 trips away booked so by the end of the season will of had good use out of it.
We have had quite a good summer to get started though, I'm not sure what 3 or 4 trips away would be like if it pee'd down every time.

My wife wants to buy one so we can just clear off with the kids when time allows not sure my self. Have tried camping it was fun
Caravanning is great, you can just take off when you get a window of bad weather.
we like to head to the west coast when it is bucketing on the east.
most farmers have a 4x4 so towing not a prob, and just ask a farmer if you can park up to get a bit of solitude.
we throw all the bikes the back of the hilux and go with that, with all the other gear in caravan.
you can hook up anytime and go home if weather turns bad

Caravans and caravanning generate such a lot of emotion both positive and negative. (Look at some of the motoring forums, as well as some of the replies from normally well balanced contributors on this thread)
Just do what you want to do, and accept that we are all different.

We have a Transit camper van, have camped in laybys, pub carparks, town centres etc. Lot less hassle than a caravan, bit small, but kids flown now so plenty of room for two of us.

Bought our first caravan 12 or 13 yrs ago, on our third van now and will probably swap for a motorhome next year, fantastic holiday with small children, we tend to go for 2 to 3 nights and fairly locally, Royal Welsh next week so time to drag it out again this weekend! If we do take the plunge and go for a motorhome, we'll do 2 or 3 weeks in France next year.
The beauty of it for us is that we can go whenever we have an opportunity, we could go 10 miles or 200 miles away and the kids wouldn't mind, it forces you to take downtime with the family too, if I was off at home, there's always the temptation to do something but if I'm in the caravan, there's nothing to do but enjoy time with the kids.
Like others have said, you'll either love it or hate it, I wasn't keen initially but once we'd bought our first one, I was hooked, oh, the only downside is the awning...work of the devil, I've heard it called a divorce in a bag :) we've got an air one now, great piece of kit.

Inlaws had a motorhome now a caravan.
Takes him a day to get it ready to go away spends half the time away dragging sh!t and water around then a day cleaning and sorting when they get home.
So a day break is 3 days work. No thanks.

The chem toilet, and water humping are really things of the past, you can do this, if you want to, but most sites have good toilets, washrooms and both water and power hookups.

Great for when you have small kids (load up loads of clutter!), get a super pitch so all services are connected, then show off your reversing skills backing a 23' caravan in on the blind side first time... who needs a pansys motor mover when you have 200 hp on the front!

I've got one, a fairly old ally skinned caravan.

Not been away in it for about 6 years, don't seem to find the time now, the other issue is what to tow it with.
If I take the transit I look like a pikey, the single cab Hilux has nowhere to put anything and I don't like driving the Defender...

I'd like a demountable camper to sit on the back of the Hilux.
That would be perfect.
