A shame the BBC bigots don't take notice of this sort of thing.

It winds me up when they bash beef and have a video clip of cattle grazing in a field.

Ever the Ray of sunshine aren't you.

You build more soil.
How deep were the soils of the great American plains before they started cultivating them causing erosion?
So if as farmers we build more soil are we "offsetting" fossil carbon emissions or are we simply restoring the carbon that has been lost from soils due to generations of agricultural activity?

Does the fossil fuel industry feel the need to offset the billions of tons burnt in generations past or just future use?
Offsetting is merely a technical exercise for the purposes of redistributing wealth not carbon.... If we are to avoid run away global warming we actually need to sequester more carbon than is emitted.. building soil carbon or planting trees in one locality when globally the soil carbon and forest cover continues to show a net decline is like trying to stem a cut artery with a Peppa Pig plaster

Fully agree with your offsetting point. It makes me 😡
But your 2nd point makes no sense. That's saying there's no point me doing anything cos its a drop in the ocean. If we all think like that nothing will ever be done.

My point is it is equally important to cut CO2 emissions regardless of source, be they fossil fuel, soil carbon or forest. There is little point (from a climate change view point) in me sequestering small amounts of soil carbon if farmers elsewhere continue to oxidise their soil carbon by cultivating organic soils.... there is little point me planting a tree only for 10 to be felled somewhere else in the world. Soil sequestration is of limited value if we do not also do more to reduce carbon emissions from all sources, not just fossil fuels. At what point will we realise we are not going to get the global cooperation that is necessary to avoid climate change? When do nations start to invest in measures to mitigating against climate change rather than investing in measures which will ultimately fail to stop what is now almost certainly inevitable?

Can’t really see they are doing much different then we are except we have a darn sight more hedges which should put us well above them in the pecking order.

Are you saying forget trying to combat climate change and instead build bigger flood defences?

I am saying at some point that decision will have to be made... if climate change and sea level rises are unavoidable, and given the lack of international agreement they surely are, the sooner we start making the decisions and investments towards what can be protected and what will have to be abandoned the better.
