Carmarthen Mart

It's a bitter circle, no cattle = no buyers = no money = no vendors = no cattle.

Bjp have done no wrong to us and we have been trading with them for donkeys years, but for the moment we won't be going there.

Yes, ND in NCE. And thriving, resurrected weekly calf sales, not seen since the early 90's.

But unfortunately, some incomers are crying to the local press about cows bellowing, when they are housed at the mart premises overnighr?
Dad and I sell lambs and cull ewes occasionally through Emlyn, has really turned around in recent months. There was a time we'd go to Crymych or Llanybydder which are further away because the buyers weren't there but now it is much busier.

I have sold many a freshly calved heifer through the old Carmarthen mart, and Cardigan mart. A lesson in how to rip the heart out of a town is to move or close the mart. Cardigan was a market town, with trade coming from local people using the mart and then shopping or using the many pubs, and was very busy with the wives spending, and everyone catching up on the news and gossip. Now it is just a tourist centre.
I can understand the need to move Carmarthen mart as it had outgrown the old site, it was so busy, it was always difficult to unload. A shame to hear it has gone quiet.

Is it just the mart, or is the property side iffy too ?
As an aside, I was browsing the website and spotted the TAG dealership site for sale ?????

Offers in region of £800k?

“TENURE & POSSESSION
The property is currently let to Tallis Amos Group Ltd on a 10 year lease which commenced 1st October 2013 and will end September 2023
Current Rent £40,000“

Does anyone know how much the Carmarthen site cost and how much pen holding capacity there is for each stock species? Entirely out of interest as it must have cost a lot to build.

Be a tragedy if it close . Been going off an on for years . Love the banter and the food in the cafe is the best around , and its simply to far for farmers up here to run to Whitland
Oh come on it isn’t too far! If Whitland moved to Carmarthen it would make perfect sense, it’s 45-50 minutes for me to get to Whitland for me and Carmarthen is 55-60 minutes yet far better site and far better access/routes for buyers and vendors alike.

I used to go to Carmarthen a lot, then had an issue with a cow that I bought which the auctioneer was most unhelpful. I did take some calves there when JJ was closed due to the virus and the drover was so rude and very tough with the calves. Then they sent me someone else's check, took forever to reissue it, and the icing on the cake was being sent a £500 bill for pigs which I most certainly did not buy. Such a shame, it used to be great there, good hwyl and the cafe is fantastic ?

Droves of farmers driving past Carmarthen to bring cattle and sheep to Brecon. Such a shame when markets are lost.
Such a lot depends on the auctioneer. Locally, Talybont on Usk mart is a tiny affair but CTF's Rory Mathews has turned it around and it's going well in an area where we have at least 6 thriving marts within 40 miles.
Carmarthen mart was effectively finished the day Huw Evans left
