Perhaps being a bit old fashioned ,but what are differences between a carpenter, joiner and cabinet maker??
I expect it is a job to find a real craftsman of any of the three mentioned as so much chipboard, plywood used ,as opposed to solid wood.

My grandfather was a master joiner, it's a proper title earned by a full apprenticeship iirc. A cabinet maker is furniture grade work whereas a carpenter does the truss fabrication and so on in a building situation. All are a bit redundant now as so much stuff comes ex factory ready to fit together and not always made of wood !

Joiner is windows and doors types stuff traditionally ie making them and joining them
Carpenter is roofs, studding, fitting stuff etc.
Cabinet maker makes furniture but that could still be with sheet goods if so be it - lots of mid 19C furniture is made with veneer ply and the rest of it would be hand constructed

I'd say there are still plenty of all about capable of doing a job for you if you wanted one done. Lots of CNC machines about nowadays though

As above, joiner makes in a workshop, carpenter generally is site work and cabinet is furniture.

Still a huge amount of people with the skills about. The trouble is finding people who appreciate that skill enough to pay for it. There is a lack of young people coming into workshops but that's due to earning better money and needing less tools on site.

I do all three although most of my time is workshop based making doors / windows and staircases. It's what I enjoy the most.

People seem to think you.need a university degree to go and get a job with a good wage.

You can still earn more by being on the tools in a skilled trade.

But I feel some trades are getting a bit watered down now.

Such as electrical installers.

Isn't it a two week course for this?
Frightening.

I asked the question, as we are thinking of having window seats with big sliding drawers built in, for our new garden room. Window seat top to be cut thin slabs of natural stone, so that large plant pots can be put on them,as in the conservatory that is going to be replaced.

That seems pretty straight forward to a bespoke joinery company. You shouldn't have a problem finding someone.
