The front axle on my tractor (case mx170) is makings knocking/ tapping sound a lot when turning and not to bad in a straight line. Any body had any experience with this before. I feel it's worn but not exactly sure what is worn without checking it out.

Has it a limited slip diff? Has it got the right oil in it? Limited slip diffs without LS oil in can sound as they are about to self destruct, changing the oil cures it.

If it's the independent front suspension axle that is fitted it is the carrier for the drive shaft to the hub that is rattling. You can sometimes tighten the pins up for them by the nuts on the caps on the front and back of the axle. I can't find a diagram or picture of the axle to show you. You can get hardened washers to put in to take up the play. To put them in you need to fit new bushes as well. Will warn you that parts aren't cheap.
Keep it all well greased helps a lot.

Thanks. When I he chance will have to take a closer look.

It's only done 360hrs with me and has been greased regularly, especially as I was told about it needing regular greasing. Just don't know how well it was greased with previous owner.

As said

Play on ujs, play on pins suspension etc king pins.

And having the wrong oil in the diff or not been changed in ages, due to the limited slip diff it will need LS90 oil in it, very common for people including dealers! to use the wrong oil in axles. Had dealer on phone only yesterday moaning about noisy axles and turned out he was using wrong oil in it.

You need to slacken the lock nuts on the nuts pointed at with the grease nippels in the middle of them and tighten up the middle. They are on the cab side of the axle. 2 of them per side. If you can't tighten them any more it will need new bushes and extra washers inside. Possibly new pins which must be made from platinum the price cnh charge for them!
