Carrier/xpress/short disc

Been looking around at the above machines. What’s peoples opinions please? We’re looking for something that will mix in cover crops in front of spring crops, do a light chit behind the combine and it’s mainly wet clay soil or it’s very cobbly if dry.

The xpress seems very heavy duty and I wonder if it could actually be set shallow? Also the running costs look to be the worst out of the 3?

The carrier looks like it would suit a light chit but not so good mixing in 3 ft tall cover crops?

The weaving short disc seems to sit in the middle of the two other machines and to me looks the best option?

This would be a used purchase of no more than £15,000 to suit a 230hp tractor. I’m looking at 5-6.5m versions.

I really like my 5m Carrier except for one thing being that the steel packer seems to wear out far too fast , though probably less of a problem on your heavy land. We replaced ours 4 years ago and its already very worn.

The replacement rings are 6-7k for a 5m and are an absolute pain in the arse to change. So don't buy a cheap one with a worn out packer like I did unless you have priced up the parts.

Quite frankly, imo, if it’s wet clay soil I wouldn’t touch it with a short disc, you may end up with wet smeared mushy mess. Been there done that, parked the bloody thing in the nettles.
Dry clay fine, wet clay, no don’t do it .

I’ve a 37ft horsch and in dry soil it ideas a great job. Once it get wetter it’s a pita. Discs plug and stop turning which causes a big heap of soil by the time you stop. On stubble just tickling the surface to promote a chit they work good. Mine has a spring leaf type roller on the back but that’s little use in wet clay. They shine in incorporating residue and sizing a cover crop.

What cover crop is that?

We were so dry this year that side tiller on these oats stayed about four inches long and the main shoot was the only one to head out. Shortly after harvest we had a week of showery weather that kicked the tillers into growing. So technically is an oat volanteer cover crop.

Sorry to high jack the thread but does anybody use short discs on their own for primary cultivation on light land?

We are thinking of getting a set (Amazone Catros). The drilling is done by a contractor who offers combi or horsch disc drill.
