Cars overtaking while waiting to turn right

Regardless of what I’m driving I always work on the principle than only 10% of other road users are aware of your ( or anyone else’s ) presence. You’ve only got to look at the expressions on the faces of the oncoming traffic to see the truth in this.

I’ve lost count of the number of times when whilst making progress on multi lane roads (73 on gps) I have been passed by a youngster doing her makeup with little apparent concentration on their surroundings !!

You are now thinking like a motorcylist!! ;)
The other day I was behind a slowish vehicle & there was 5 cars behind me with a motorbike at the rear. At the first safe opportunity I checked my mirrors and moved out to overtake - just as I got past & checked my mirrors again preparing to move in there was Mr Motorcycle pulling into the gap between me & the slow vehicle - I'd like to know what he was thinking. On another recent occasion I had one pass in the gap between me & the push bike I was passing - he was going so fast that the cyclist ended up in the ditch! As a car driver I always assume that every motorcycle rider is an idiot out to ruin everyone else's day... sometimes I'm wrong...

We farm on a busy A road here, and it seems to be an accident blackspot as well. Another young lad killed here last week.

The road although not ideal isn't a bad road but the standard of driving has gone downhill badly in the last few years, it seems that people are just taught how to pass the test, not how to drive.

My father had a triple fatality accident at my road end 20 odd years ago, when a car rear ended him while turning right, the digger while written off, did better than the Vauxhall that hit him, and I can tell you it doesn't go away, I/we think on it every day without fail.

It makes you very aware, often I won't sit and turn right if I'm at all suspicious of other drivers, either get on the verge or go down to next junction and turn around so we can get off using a left turn. Any casual drivers here at silage are well told to abandon the turn if there is any doubt, forager will easily wait a few minutes.

Most cars have loads more power than ever, but folk can't pass, we were taught to get it down in to 2nd or 3rd and floor it past, be in the danger zone as little as possible, nowadays that should be even easier, but I don't know if its lack of knowledge, or fear of going over the limit and getting caught or what.:confused:

Beacon blindness is well and truly a thing round here, it seems to hypnotise some drivers in to following you forever, more than once I have pulled into a layby to find the cars following in also and then wondering why you are stopping and where they are, its actually hilarious watching them realise and then scramble to get back on the road. :):)

There is also the sheep mentality thing, which could also be the last point but I guarantee that if the first car overtakes while you have the RH indicator on, the others following will too, they are just following the one in front. I'd really like to think that if the cops got a car passing me while my RH flasher was on, they'd do the hell out of them.

I have tried a traffic policeman to dump his hat, put on a boilersuit, and come with me carting straw, instead of sitting behind a bush with the camera, or driving about in a luminous car so he could see what its really like, but funnily enough, not interested.

To be honest I find truck drivers the best, and people who drive every day not such a problem, its the ones who drive at the weekends that scare the crap out of you, they, while proficient just lack the amount of experience and judgement that regular daily users have.

When I did my lessons a few years back, we did one overtake of a cyclist on a busy road. I went to drop a gear to give me more acceleration and the instructor batted my hand away with the pen and said "we never touch the gearstick once we're above 30mph because taking your hand off the wheel is dangerous". Told me to put my foot to the floor in 5th which led to an uncomfortably long time on the wrong side of the road. He said the same thing when I went to drop a gear coming into a 40 zone. "How are you going to change up a gear when we come out the other end? Remember we never touch the gear stick above 30mph".

Well if thats the shite that instructors are telling people nowadays its no wonder folk cant overtake tractors safely. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

What happened to exposing the vehicle to danger for as short as a time as possible?

What a load of bollox ….
My general sequence is 1st, 2nd up to around 40mph then 4th to 70mph and into 6th to cruise at 73mph then back down to 3rd for a roundabout. I will use all the upward gears when I am towing.

Blimey, mine said drop a gear as you approach a (still green but possibly will change) traffic light, so if it changes to amber you can accelerate through the junction.

Dunno what that is all about... but it is the same mentality that tells Learners not to use gears when slowing for a junction or roundabout etc... Or as you found, leave the car in a high gear, and let it lug... Foolishness, IMO.

I suspect they will happer when everyone is driving electric

Why do continually overtake tractors indicating right and waiting to turn off.

Today with a 200hp tractor and 3000 gallon tank on the back had to stop and wait for 5 cars to overtake me before I could turn right into field.

Next run I was stopped waiting for on coming traffic to clear so I could turn right and the car behind cut out immediately to try and pass but I had already started pulling across his lane so he had to wait.

The other day and artic lorry did the exact same thing just as I was about to go right into a side road with the same outfit. I thought being a lorry they would show more sense.

2 led indicators on the back which are as plain as day and working so not like they can say they never knew what I was planning.

Is it illegal to overtake someone indicating and waiting to turn right?
Its the same in oz, dumb knows no boundaries, discriminates against no race or gender.

Ant...

The standard of driving in this country is some of the worst I’ve seen in the world! Driving on blue lights occasionally really makes you realise just how rarely if ever people check their rear view mirrors . It’s not an age thing either. Some drivers just haven’t a clue what’s happening around them. Ridding a motorcycle as mentioned does make you a better car driver. I can pretty much always say I know just as well what’s behind me as what’s in front . The amount of times I’ve indicated and pulled it the left to allow an emergency vehicle to pass to only find the 4 cars behind me all overtake me thinking what’s that Wally doing! You then see them panicking as they are blue lights and stop on blind corners or hills. A huge push for increased roads policing could really save lives and accident rates.

Utter nonsense! Riding a motorcycle might make some people better car drivers, but it doesn't turn off the "I'm a twit" gene that so many seem to carry!

Just today in Cambridge on a one way street with a contra-flow cycle lane. Pillock on a big bike overtook everyone using the cycle lane & sat at the lights deafening everyone around revving his engine to show off - then when the lights changed he sped off at considerably more than the 20mph limit.

Yes but how is that related to my comment?

Not against the police, but a increase in roads policing round here just means the traffic car sitting behind a bush or in some gateway taking people for doing 70 in a 60mph road at 2am when there is nothing else on road.
They will be found sitting on some open straight never at a accident blackspot.

Not saying that speeding is ok, but its an easy take, easy revenue as well, and in my opinion does nothing to catch poor driving.

It can't be easy but they need to develop ways of catching and for that matter educating bad drivers, the muppets that have been talked about on this thread.
Often its the slow or nervous drivers that cause a build up of traffic.

Mind you, if people are being taught to drive like Techwise suggested above we are on a slippery slope.
