Yes changed all oils when we acquired it as I was reading up on them it's done it since we got then came kind of right but had to have the clutch in to start it and had no 3 or 4 in hydra shift and now it's really bad barely moves oil pressure is pump internal

Clutch or no oil pressure ,my last 1490 had broken brake band and ended up breaking tractor due to repair was more than worth
Are parts expensive for internals for these or hard to come by thanks in the process of pulling cab off between work

If I remember it was over 2 thousand for me send my gearbox to Barclay's and get recon box sent back, tractor was scruffy loader and wasn't worth the hassle, unless its a tidy tractor and keeping it long term only then would I do gearbox up.

Barclay recon'd a HS box for us, Top Service from him. (y)

I did the work of removing and replacing myself. It cost around £2000. Chunky money for a tractor that is not worth mega money, but I'd rather sell a kidney than scrap the 1494. She had (and still does) give us good service.

@Ray996 is right, HS troubles are. or have been the end for these tractors, but 94's are getting less, arguably more desirable with collectors, so scrapping them may start to die out.

It may not work or be practical but would it be cheaper to get a standard gearbox and stick it in, instead of doing the hydrashift?

Yes and no.

There's not much difference in cost between a recon'ed Synchromesh and Hydrashift. You could just bang a synchromesh in in place of the HS, but would you do that without giving that a through check over / overhaul first?

Plus, linkages would be different.

Personally, if it's a tidy and useful tractor, get the Hydrashift sorted, especially if your good with spanners, It's all fairly chunky stuff to remove and replace, the more specialist gearbox work can be done elsewhere. £2000 is a lot of money, but a DB with a buggered 'box is worth a bit more than what it weighs, you wont get something similar for the cost saved by getting rid, and, you know the history of what you have. :)

@Joetas, I guess that you are from outside the UK? If so, this will add extra cost to ship the gearbox back and forth, but it's still worth giving Barclay Williams a call. :)

Cleanliness!!

Dead important! No straw, dust, dirt, hay, iron filings, snot, nothing apart from clean oil should come anywhere near the hydraulics or the gearbox.

If you strip her down, when you take the box out, look on the inside of the casting trough, and back axle too, is there slimy oily dirt all over it? if so, this wants a thoroughly good clean before it's put back. Dirty oil kills DB back ends. It must be spotless!

Before you tear it down, I would look for one of these...

or similar, and have a good read through, that will help you with some diagnosis first, and give you and idea of what to look at...

The 1490 is not a hydrashift either I'm leaning towards fitting my loader and engine into that 4wd tractor just doing some measuring then off to see if it may fit the 1490 is a turbo 4cylinder mines a 6 natural
