15 mins of work she begins to blow water out of rad cap little bit brown poss rusty water no collant changed Thermostat / flushed radiator / flushed block still same . She has been a bugger to start ie turning starter over for ages ( poss low compression) and eats starters 1 every year having to boost battery every time . Water pump runs free when belt removed begging to think head gasket or poss linears ? any common issues with these? any pointers much appreciated .

I wonder has the impeller on the water pump been damaged/corroded

They would be prone to corrosion in the o ring groove that the liner slides down into at the bottom of the block, especially if antifreeze hasn't been maintained but water would be entering the sump then. Sounds more like a blown head gasket to me.
As for starting,is it really cranking fast enough and is the glow plug working? Are your starters Lucas copies from far off lands? Put a Mahle geared starter on it.

Some talk of sleeves on injectors?! I think @DrWazzock had a thread on similar
We changed the injector sleeves on our 4240 but I’m not convinced we improved anything leak wise, though the old ones were in a very poor state.
We sent the head for pressure test and skim and ended up changing the head gasket twice. The first gasket blew because we reused the old bolts but new ones were £££. We did then buy a few new ones and so far the head gasket has held. There is supposed to be a beefed up gasket for the turbo engine but the gasket we had didnt seem as robust as the original. It’s held though.
With hindsight I’d buy a diesel combustion gas test kit from eBay for a few quid, stick it on the header tank and see if the test solution changes colour.
To me though it sounds like headgasket failure with coolant “blowing” out the cap.

Is it actually boiling over - or just that the coolant system is being overpressured lifting the rad cap?

If you remove the rad cap when cold and start the engine do you get bubbles?

Flushing radiator is no guarantee that you have a good flow rate or that all the water tubes are clear - suggest you check the radiator for cold spots. Rusty water suggests you still have sludge in the system.

Have you taken the top hose off and cranked the engine to make sure that coolant is flowing - i.e. you haven't sheared a key on the water pump.

Just an update guys the radiator was the problem cores knackered and blocked caused head gasket to go in turn low compression and slow on starting eating starters. All resolved now head skimmed /new gasket/new thermostat/ new radiator. All good Richard Devon you were right . Thanks for all the replies.
