If it was the diff it would be noisy all the time?

One breaking in NI if you cant find one in the UK.

I havnt looked in the gearbox yet in detail but from the diff end there is a tooth broke off the pinion and the bearing around it looks worn to hell, the crown wheel looks ok though.
The front wheels were scrubbing a bit when in 4wd but ok n 2wd so god knows where the problem originates ?
If anyone knows of a back end inc gearbox for a 1255xl in the uk I might be interested.
Thanks for your help(y)

The transmission in them is pressure lubed & if you take a flow & return out the auxiliary spool valves but simply dump the return oil back into filler bung you stave the transmission lubrication.
Just wondering if this is what happened here.

Gapples (This is just a curious question) is the 55 series a different set up to the 56 with separate hydraulic system? Why does dropping oil back through filler cause a problem? Is it due to foaming?

Hi Pete
The 55 series is a completely different transmission, it's a ZF transmission & the hydraulic oil is drawn from the transmission.
There is large bung on the valve chest area at the back of the tractor where you return any oil from a flow & return system, if you just dump the oil back into the filler/dipstick bung you stave the transmission pressure lube system.

No I havnt been doing this with this tractor, but it did have loader brackets on when I bought it.
A friend of mine said to check if the tyres are the correct size and maybe working against each other, they have similar wear but not sure if they are of the origional sizes.

I will take few picks for you along the way.

The pinion is f**ked on both ends and if you look carefully the threaded cap that holds the top pin in holding the gears ( just below the feed bag ) that's scrap aswel !
The front side of the pinion is nearly worn away and the rear end has a tooth broke off. I think it's had some abuse at some time or other, never mind she will get fixed now I've gone thus far in.

Great you actually found something, sometimes it can be hard to find the trouble when its just a noise.
As you know there is a procedure to ensure correct mesh between pinion and crown wheel.
Manual will reveal all ............

I would like to thank you for finding this link because after talking to the chap on the phone ( very good firm to deal with, very recommended from me ) the backend off the burnt out 1255xl is now in my yard and it has the turbo clutch on it yyeeessss.
Just got to give everything a big check over and decide whether to risk replacing the whole rear end or just the parts onto the old gearbox n transmission.
Can't Thankyou enough for this link cheers super two (y)

Does she live again?
She is nearly back together again, gearbox done, trumpet housings were a nightmare because the one I origionally had has differing size brake drums so that was a pain, half inch difference. I tryed swapping the internals around but it just wasn't correct so the firm I bought the burnt out one off sent me the trumpet housings off the burnt out one.
Also the diff was operated on the other side to mine, it was engaged from the left of the diff on the origional and the burnt out one engaged from just behind the ring gear on the right !
( one has a 40k box and the other a 30k, but that's all sorted now after a lot of head scratching )
Turbo clutch fitted yesterday and flywheel to my old engine, just got to fit the section with the pto and normal clutch on this weekend hopefully.
It's been be hell of a hard job and there isn't a single nut n bolt that hasn't been touched but it's getting closer to being done.
I've basicly been spannering for weeks on end and will be glad to see it running again.

Serious bit of work, there's not many would take on with it. Fair play..

I have to be honest mate a while back when everything was on the floor in a huge mass of parts it looked very scary prospect indeed and the only way I moved forward was just to concentrate on putting one part on at a time, the whole thought was just to much to think about!
The end is in sight now though and I can't wait to try it and hope it all works as expected.
I've got a load of pictures of it and I will put them up when I have time.
