Case international 856xl 4wd to 2wd conversion

Hi, I’ve acquired a rough 856xl plus, 1994 model. It’s a project for summer as I’ve always fancied one, the front axle is totally knackered, 4wd shaft into the axle sheared off, axle worn, centre pivot done in, I’m thinking of doing a 2wd conversion on it, I’d prefer it as a 2wd anyway so it’s no loss to me, my question is, will a 956 2wd front axle and tombstone fit or will it have to be an 856, I take it a 895 type 2wd axle and tombstone won’t? Looks a pretty easy job to remove the current axle and tombstone unless I’m missing something. Thanks for any advice and inputs.

For projects like this the online parts catalogue is invaluable
A quick look through it turns up two different 2wd axles for the 856 and that the axles are also used on the 844, 956 and 1056.

Thanks very much for the reply, I can’t seem to get anywhere with that parts catalog? Thanks tho. I think I can get a 956 2wd axle complete so if that’s the case I may be in luck

This should take you straight to the 856 parts catalogue.
I don't think the site is as well laid out as it used to be but it's meant to work on all devices and browsers now.
When you find the parts you're looking for you can click on the part number and it'll tell you all the models that part was fitted to. For example the tombstone for the heavy duty axle

Thanks for that, looks like there is a light and heavy duty axle. Either would suit me, il measure up a 956 one that I know is the heavy duty type, was hoping the tombstone off a 895 type may fit too but I can’t figure it out!

Its a long time ago but the 2wd 956 I drove and the 2wd 956 bioth had 5stud hubs unlike the 885s which were 6. From memory I would think a 956 might suit.

895 tombstone looks completely different and was used on the 85, 95 and 42 series

If you want to look further in the parts catalogue, below where it says Case IH you'll see 'Type' which gives three options, choose model to start with, then look under where it says CNH Industrial on the left, here you'll see 'Select a search type' will now say 'select by model name' here you can type say 856xl, you may end up with further choices like what year or 2 or 4 wheel drive, then further sections such as engines, drive train, hydraulics, pictures and part numbers are shown going back instead of model you can now select part number, move across left and put part number in and it will tell which models the parts fit on.
