Thinking on it now, were the 40k boxes not all hy-tran instead of gear oil?

Nah. Our 1056 was 30K with hytan pressure lubed syncro with long sticks. We had a black and red CaseIH 856 about 18 months after. She was 30K syncro with long sticks but had 90 gear oil.
Don't know quite what the theory was with them.

Just a thought were IH still building in more than one factory? I'll guess the man who would know is Matthias Buschman a former Neuss employee who has charted history and models.

How do you find the engine mount?

Looks like it is stable and ideal for handling an engine?

Last engine I rebuilt was a 3 cylinder on a table top, but awkward when turning it upside down etc

It’s not bad for the money, makes it a lot easier although it takes a bit to turn it over, you have to man handle the engine it’s self there’s to much resistance to turn it with the handle. If I get chance I’ll add some bearings and change it a bit. Still worth having tho.

Got round to doing a bit more now some parts have arrived, there’s some light scoring on the end of the crank where the old seal has been running, hoping it will be ok with a new oil seal.

Made a bit more work for myself after necking off the bolt that gose through the waterpump then the timing cover and into the block, just necked the head off originally but it was also seized into the aluminium timing cover, thort I had it turning nicely from side to side 1/4 of a turn each way but unfortunately not, at least it released the cover tho. Liners came out nicely no sign of any corrosion anywhere

Can anybody tell me how to tell if the pump has been opened up in the past, after the time and money that’s been put into it I’d like to make sure it’s right and back to original if possible,

There should be a cap on the end of the screw which is held in place by the piece of wire shown in your first picture. Since the cap is missing its likely that it has been opened up.

Thanx for the reply. Would I be able to find out how many turns out from fully in it should be to be in the original position or is this not how they would be set up at the factory?

Possibly but i don't know how many turns it should be. A good indication is how hard the engine revs. With the handle throttle pulled fully back it should be about 2400 rpm if its like an 885xl. If its any higher than that you'll know it has been turned up.

Thanx I’ll try that when it’s back up and running, I can’t remember what it was reving to before, is it screw in to reduce fuel going through the pump to lower revs? Would adjusting the throttle lever assembly affect the top rev limit or dose this just control tick over RPM as that looks like it has been messed with in the past

this has nothing to do with this subject but I will say it as it is about an IH 454 which had engine fully reconditioned including new oil pump but when hot there was zero oil pressure, so it was dismantled again and the camshaft bearings were either renewed or it was inline bored which solved the problem

Just get pump serviced at a specialist and they will make sure it’s correctly set.....
