Case Maxxum 5140 problems

Hi
Got a 5140 maxxum that we wanted to use on the baler this year, however it has some problems

The first is the brakes, if you bleed them they will last about 2 days and then they will need bleeding again, i have been told it could be the seals in the back end. Anyone had similar problems?
I dont fancy stripping it down to find out its something else.

However the main problem is the hydraulic spools are very very slow.

It was used for the first time this year on the muck spreader. One spool worked great and the other was very slow. Then the next day the 2nd spool became as slow as the first one . So both of them are now that slow the tractor is useless with any thing that needs hydraulics.

Any one have any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

don't know about 5140...but 885xl have a little resevoir under bonnet by windscreen....i had same brake problem as you until i discovered there were little metal pipes in the inlet to this resvevoir....now i presume these were to keep the inlet/outlet at different levels...but if these pipes slipped down they were at the same level thus however much i bled them it only lasted a couple of days....seeing as they were both donny built it might be similar

Yes they are the same, mine had the same symptoms but turned out it was the piston seals on the brakes.

Hi there the brakes is most likely the supply pipe on the header bottle on master cylinders. Remove the feed pipe and check the metal sleeve has not slipped out of bottle. This pipe should be pushed up inside the bottle and this keeps a head of oil in bottle at all times. The spool valve, sounds like the flow control taps are adjusted incorrectly.

Thanks for the replies !!! :)

I'll check the reservoir pipes in the morning, worth a try before stripping it down.

@Green Summit how can you adjust the flow control taps? Would they make the spools work one minute and not the next, if they were adjusted incorrectly?

If it's intermittent it must be something else. Could be pump compensator or the pump itself.

On your brakes, check the bottle as suggested, if empty check the feed to it.

Spools
If everything else is working ok, like your hydraulic 3 point linkage, power steering, plus regulated circuits such as PTO, power shift & shuttle it's very likely to be a check valve in a signal line.

Put the plough on it this morning and it lifts it with out a problem.

So put it back on the spreader and opened the back door while turning the steering and pressing the brakes and it made no difference to the speed

Also just put it on the baler and opened the door and it takes about 14 seconds with no revs on and about 12 seconds with revs on.
While opening it with out revs, if i turned the steering or pressed the brake the door slow right down and stops for about half a second
