I didn't say the norms have anything to do with my idea of decent hp. And you are right, I do compare to quite old tractors as my newest is a 2004.
Let me clarify: my idea of decent hp is nominal on the wheels. I now tend to use pto hp as it is easily identifiable, I agree that it isn't the best norm for everyone. But by the same token iso hp is completely useless as you are never able to use that power anyway.

Nominal? Surely max would be the one of actual interest or are you also only considering torque at nominal RPM?
ISO hp is not useless as it's just a number, everyone uses the same standard so it doesn't really matter what the numbers are...

Plenty about powercommand boxes bankrupting the owner

That gearbox and engine combination is an abomination anyway and best put on a slow boat to China in fragmented form. 'Relucta-shift', 'Hope-and-pray command' or 'Guess-a-shift' would be better monikers. Machinery operators enjoyed speedier and more precise gear changes in 1900 when they were still relying on shire horses for tractive effort.

You might be right that nominal isn't all that great a standard. I like to be on the safe side so I pick the lower number.
I didn't say iso is useless. It is however useless to me. So hey🤷‍♂️

Surely their are more prehistoric gearbox engine combinations than this with lots of problems with gaskets, overheating and thirst problems and crude crowbar change gears just to mention a few.
The gearbox’s and engine combination in CNH certainly in TM /case were up with the most reliable of their time yes there is good and bad in all brands

I've no experiance of cvt gearboxes, NH, JD, Fendt or otherwise.
But the FPT engine used in NH and Case is certainly not an "abomination" , it is weĺl regarded, reliable and has good power, torque and economy. Quite a few other brands could do with an engine as good.
Blue tractors had a disastrous time with engines in the 80s and they came up with the Powerstar/Genisis engine which was superb in its time and continues to perform well on many farms. The FPT 6.7 litre engine is better again.
My local dealer had the problem of mechanics being through their apprenticeship and never having seen inside an engine!! They had to get an old trade in and do up the engine to allow the guys to see inside.
I would agree that Range command box is although fairly reliable, is hopelessly outdated and should be retired. Slow shuttle, slow reverse, and "clunky" for want of a better word.

Back in 2010 I drove a T7060 a fair bit. It had a power command gearbox. It was an absolute beast. Smooth on the road, quiet and had a lovely airy cab.

Fast forward a bit. I have driven a variety of T6070, 6080 or 6090 from memory all with either the Range command or Power command gearbox. Without exception all of these tractors have been gutless with some peculiar behaviour that would appear, to my untrained eye to be a disagreement between how the engine serves up the power/torque and how the gearbox decides to make use of it. Given that both variants are hugely more sophisticated than the extended right arm dislocator semi-powershift gearbox found in the JD 6020 range, I was sat in them thinking cripes, I'd sooner be back in a JD than driving these. I don't know what the issue is but they were all thoroughly pants.
