What does it mean that a car has been classed as a Cat C in its past? Written off? badly crashed and repaired? Stolen and recovered? Does it mean it will be worth a lot less.

From the RAC

Category S (formerly Category C)
The new Category S means the vehicle has suffered structural damage.

This could include a bent or twisted chassis, or a crumple zone that has collapsed in a crash.

Category S damage is more than just cosmetic, therefore, and the vehicle will need to be professionally repaired.

Also, it won’t be safe to drive until then.

Category N (formerly Category D)
Vehicles graded accordingly haven’t sustained structural damage, so the issue may be cosmetic, or a problem with the electrics that isn’t economical to repair.

Don’t assume such vehicles are drivable, however; non-structural faults may include brakes, steering or other safety-related parts.

Cat c would be structural damage but definitely not worthless. Lots of cat c on the road although they are now cat s for structural and cat n for non structural.

well the rac check does not recognise the reg no. It is cheaper but not a lot,so will keep well clear.
Thanks all.

I wouldn’t trust the RAC check. I once bought an Astra gte 16v, checked it on RAC and it came up “clean”. When I wanted to sell it 6 months later, they checked it on HPI autodata and it came up as cat d. I’d not crashed it and lost a load of money on.

Lad I know has just had his car completely written of ,,it was parked on the road side and a motorbike over cooked a corner and damaged all of the driver side doors and panels ,,the damage didn't look bad ,,his insurance company looked at the age of the car (06 ) it was a diesel and the repair costs .
In their mind it wasn't financially viable to repair it ,,He asked them why they were not prepared to repair ,,they said it was now policy to totally write of all vehicles over a certain age ,,as he said ,reading through the lines it's a crafty way to get older vehicles of the road
