Hi

Just wondered if anyone new if a cat d3 dozer was a genuine cat machine. I have a sneaky feeling it maybe a mitsabushi painted in cat colours?

They were made by Mitsubishi under license back in the 1970s along with the 931 track loading shovel. It has a 62hp 4 cyl Cat 3204 engine in it and 3f/1r powershift box. I wouldn't have said it was a grey import. Matey was asking 6,750 UK.P for it.

We're they any good? Would it be up to pulling a mole plough?

Haven't worked on one so can't really say but comparing it to a D4 I would say it will be too light on weight and power and probably the torque converter will overheat if its on long drags.

They were really designed as a tread softly type machine for backfilling rather than a draft tractor

Would think shell probably pull a mole plough, not sure how long the torque converter would put up with it though. Made by Mitsubishi as said previously. We had one nearly identical to that before we bought the d4, it wasn't a bad machine to be fair. Clock said 2000 hrs, but that was its 3rd time round...

Underpowered, and transmissions are a weak point but a tidy one is still a useful tool for finishing work. Not in the same league as a d4.
