Cattle handling

Will be putting a cattle handling race in over the next couple weeks hopefully. It’s an old cubicle shed where the scrape passage is 12inches lower than the old beds. Will be raising the old scrape passage so it’s all level. Question is, will I be ok concerting uprights for the race in the passage which would be 12 inch deep or so I need to dig deeper. The uprights will also be supported with metal box crossbars on inside of race aswel.

Personally I’d make the race in the workshop with flat plates on the bottom, then rag bolt it to the floor.

If you do go down the concreting route, rule of thumb here with all posts is 1/3rd in 2/3rds out.

I won’t have a tall race then. ? yea seems not a bad idea making it in workshop. ??

Put a plate on the bottom of the posts, bolt it down, concrete the 12 inches but put a small ramp up round each post as you are doing it to keep the post from rusting off at ground level.

12 inches of concrete whilst being bolted to a solid pad below will be fine unless you are keeping Rhinos (you need 12 inch square posts for that according to the local zoo) or you are running into it regularly with a loader.

If both sides of the race are linked with cross bars 12 inches of concrete will be plenty
If you have any concerns plate the bottom of the uprights and bolt to original then put concrete down
With the sides linked its not going to move with 12 inches thoughthough
