Cattle passport

I would just sort it out. If you are due a TB test then that will add to more hassle. Bit young to be eating it so you'll have to keep it. Speak to bcms or vets. Eat it later on yes but worth getting it sorted all correct.

Have a TB test looming in the not so distant future hence me discovering it not being registered when selecting cattle i want to sell, think I’ll phone bcms and see if they can sort it one way or another, I’ll let u all know how it goes!

Definitely used to as I have done it several times no problem, if you register it as new born and get an inspection soon you will be in deep shiiiite
Yes my neighbour and i have both had inspections in the last 12mths, a right ball ache reading all the tags, matching them to pp's and finding every animal in the movement book, all at a moments notice. Peace of mind to have everything correct if they do turn up.

I once heard of a dreadful criminal act where someone in a similar situation had a registered calf die. It was of the same sex and of similar age to within a few months as the unregistered calf. I know this is hard to believe, but he cut the tags out of the dead calf, and sent it off to the knackery without recording the event.

He then ordered a new tag for the dead calf and tagged the unregistered calf, which for some reason managed to lose the other tag which had to be re-ordered and replaced some time later. I don't know whether or not it was the same sex, but such a devious character would have sent the passport back to BCMS for correction a few weeks later.

I know it was a heinous crime and the perpetrator deserved to be fined heavily for such an irresponsible act which could have had a severe effect on food safety and public health.
The death penalty needs bringing back for such crimes!:ROFLMAO:

i would be amazed if they let you skip registering tag numbers . Book it to a barren dam that hasnt calved in 9mths

I run 2 number sets, just ordered 150 double yellow tags for bulls and beef crosses and 100 yellow/metal sets for herd replacements. The number sets always have to follow on from the last registered number but I can use them in any order I like.

I used to be able to run the 2 sets 10000 tags apart, so all my herd replacement tags were sequential for ages, but now I get gaps of 150 every so often. This was stopped when we all had to start back at 0 whenever they last changed the tag rules

Its not a rule, you can skip numbers, I know people who tag males in a different pattern from females, often with different coloured secondary tags.
My neighbour used to do this but for dairy bred and beef bred calves, he was told he was not to do that anymore (although I'm not sure if it was 10 for dairy 10 for beef or 50 of each or what). The odd tag I dont think is an issue.

Call BCMS , tell them you forgot to register it , they will issue a registration document for calf , if you still have the Dam on farm , the BCMS will send you a list of approved laboratories to pick from to buy a DNA kit , the vet does your blood test , and result may take 30 days , if you haven't got Dam you can keep calf on holding but not move off holding alive , maybe poss home kill not sure .

I do this. Buy in blocks of 100. Heifers all have both tags yellow. Holstein bulls and beef cross all get yellow primary and white secondary. The white secondary has DOB written in the management space. Makes it easy to see what’s for sale.

we used to buy a lot of calves, some farmers tagging methods leave a lot to be desired, by 14months, a lot of replacement tags ordered. Ordered some, phone call, trading standards were coming out, to speak to me, under caution ??????? anyway, rung them up, asked what was the problem, I had ordered a replacement tag, for a calf, that had gone to fallen stock months before, checked through my records, turned out, 2 calves, had diff tags in ears, 1 had uk 123456, and uk123457, with the other calf the same, result, 'oh, that's all right then'
Also, in 2001, foot and mouth, sent artic load of stores, up north, months later, trading standards were disputing the age of the cattle, in an abattoir, suffice to say, the cattle described to me, were definitely not any we had sent north, never heard any result from that. But, if you have a problem, that you can't conveniently solve, BCMS, trading standards, and ministry vets, are usually helpful, but, a word of caution, cousin got in a mess, helped him sort it out, but £15,000 deduction on sfp, fine against each animal.
But, in all fairness to BCMS the 28 day rule, is correct, as farmers, sometimes our paperwork, leaves a bit to be desired, and if not enforced, one could only imagine the mess. If you try to register a calf outside of those 28 days, on the website, it does tell you, and you can 'edit' !!!!!!!

They never gave us the option of a DNA test on one we late registered once. We did it online, it did flag a warning but only like the one you get when doing movements. It was only 2 or 3 mths late and they wouldn't issue a passport, and the animal couldn't be moved. They never contacted us, just issued the birth notification document.
If we had have lied and altered its date of birth we would have got a passport OK, but because we were honest we got penalised

only 2 or 3 months late, you ignored the warning, what did you expect ? If every body did that did that, the whole system would crumble, it might have it's faults, but it would be hard to improve. All in all, I think they do a good job, tracebility is what every one wants, it provides that. I really don't have a problem with them refusing pass ports, and I would think you have learn't a lesson.

Yes i think they have to stay strict to stop any fraudulent activity which is a good thing - not very convenient for me even though i made a genuine mistake but im happy to play by the rules for the good of the system
